Saturday was a proud day for Said Ali.
Though the young man was one of 1,890 graduates during Minnesota State Mankato's spring commencement, he is the first in his family to earn a college degree.
Ali double majored in geography and urban and regional studies — with certificates, he notes, in geographic information systems and non-profit leadership. Soon, he will attend graduate school to study public administration.
And from there?
“I want to go back to Somalia and make a difference,” he said.
As graduates posed with family in front of the trademark fountain and tossed mortarboards into the air in the Taylor Center parking lot, there was an almost palpable sense of moving forward, of ambition and possibility.
