Minnesota State Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance News Release [5-11-11]

The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance will open its 45th annual Highland Summer Theatre season with John Cariani’s sentimental take on love, “Almost, Maine,” with performances at 7:30 p.m. May 24-28 in the Andreas Theatre of the Performing Arts Center.

On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

Although it had an unsuccessful Off-Broadway run in 2006, in 2010 “Almost, Maine” unseated William Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” as the most-produced play presented in North American high schools. By December 2010, it had been produced by more than 600 companies, both amateur and professional, in the United States and Canada.

“Almost, Maine” is made possible by the General Mills Foundation Matching Gift Program. Directed by spring MFA Directing graduate Michael James, it features a four-person cast in multiple roles: Aaron Alan, J. Alexander Coe and Megan Volkman-Wilson, spring 2011 BFA Musical Theatre graduates, and Jessica Dougherty.

Individual tickets for “Almost, Maine,” as well as the other three shows in the 2011 Highland Summer Theatre season, are on sale May 16 at the MSU Theatre & Dance Box Office or at http://www.mnsu.edu/theatre/. Call 507-389-6661 or stop by the box office between 4 and 6 p.m., Monday-Friday, in the Performing Arts Center lobby. Tickets are $14.50 regular, $13 for senior citizens, youth or groups of 15 or more, and $10 for current Minnesota State Mankato students. Season tickets are $60 and available through May 28.
