World-renowned exotic instrumentalists the Orchid Ensemble will perform Monday, Oct. 3, at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The Performance Series concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in Elias J. Halling Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center.

The three-member Orchid Ensemble performs a variety of world genres, incorporating several instruments into their music. They most frequently play the Central Asian erhu and zheng. The erhu belongs to the large family of stick fiddles found in many countries. The 2,500-year-old zheng typically has 16, 21 or 25 strings, and is plucked.

The group also uses many percussion instruments, including the marimba, gongs and cajon, a wooden, box-shaped drum.

The Orchid Ensemble has released two albums, “Heartland” and “The Road to Kashgar,” both of which feature traditional Chinese music and original music. The group has also put together several multimedia presentations from some of their dangerous treks.

Lan Tung, a member of the trio and erhu virtuoso, recently traveled to the top of China’s Mount Huangshan to tape raw footage for their presentation “Mountain High River Flow.”

The trio also offers special programs for young audiences featuring instruments, music and stories from China and around the world.

Concert admission is $12; $11 for students with a valid MavCard. Those who wish to purchase tickets online may go to www.mnsu.edu/music. Those who want more information may call the Performance Series office at (507) 389-5549.

Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive university, is part of the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system, which comprises 32 state institutions.
