Kathleen Steiner, Administrative Assistant, celebrated her 40th year at MSUM in September! The Department wishes to thank Kathy for the amazing service she provides to students and faculty.



Deepa Oommen, Assistant Professor, presented a paper, Relationship among religiousness, stress, and intercultural communication apprehension, at the 2011 International Communication Association Conference in Boston, MA.

Deepa Oommen, Assistant Professor, was appointed to the editorial boards of the Journal of Intercultural Communication Research and Speaker & Gavel.

Warren Sandmann, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs participated in a discussion, “Who me? Become an Administrator?” at the CTAM Conference in September 2011.

Nan Johnson-Curiskis, Professor, presented “Teaching Effective Listening Online” at the CTAM Conference in September 2011.

Jim Dimock, Associate Professor, participated in the panel, “Forensics as Art: Exploring the Impact through Forensics Performance” at the CTAM Conference in September 2011.

Chris Medina, M.S., is the Director of Forensics at Wiley College. Mr. Medina completed his entire master’s degree online. You can follow his team at

Dr. Jason Edwards was featured in the Bridgewater Independent in the article, “BSU professor writes about American exceptionalism.” The story discusses his 2011 co-edited book, Exceptionalism: Critical Essays.

Dr. Stephen Croucher’s essay “Communicating through social networking helps immigrants” was featured in the National Communication Association’s Communication Currents, October 2011.


Dr. Desiree Rowe, an Assistant Professor at South Carolina Upstate has been awarded the 2011 NC Ellis-Bochner Autoethnography and Personal Narrative Research Award for her piece, “I should have done target practice”: Valerie Solanas and performative writing. The piece was published in Qualitative Inquiry.



The MSU, Maverick Speech Team competed at the SDSU Jackrabbit Joust on October 7th and 8th. The Mavericks earned numerous awards against competition from around the country!

As a team the Mavericks earned 3rd place against some tough competition, including nationally ranked teams from Ohio University, Miami (Ohio) University, Gustavus Adolphus College, Hastings College, Kansas State University, and Concordia College.

Individual awards include:

Jordan Christiansen: 4th in Poetry, 4th in Informative

Sarah Cain: 5th in After-Dinner Speaking

Nicole Hudak: 6th in Poetry

Skylar Carlson: Semi-finalist in Prose

Nathan Pasmore: Semi-finalist in Prose

Cade Shelton: 4th in Program Oral Interpretation

Ryan Zahn: 1st in Persuasion, 6th in Communication Analysis, 4th in Impromptu, 4th in Individual Sweepstakes


This weekend, the Mavericks host schools for the annual Larry Schnoor Invitation on October 15th and compete at Gustavus Adolphus College on October 16th.
