'Altar Boyz': Foot-stomping, rafter-raising Theatre performance.

Minnesota State Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance News Release [10-18-11]

The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance turns its collective eyes toward heaven as it presents the foot-stomping, rafter-raising musical comedy “Altar Boyz” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10-12 and 17-19, with 2 p.m. matinees Nov. 19 and 20 in the Ted Paul Theatre. It is sponsored by Blethen, Gage & Krause, LLP.

Altar Boyz is a fictional Christian boy-band on the last night of their national “Raise the Praise” tour. They are five all-singing, all-dancing heartthrobs from Ohio: Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham. With their tight harmonies and spectacular choreography, the Altar Boyz delight their audiences as they perform their signature hits such as “Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait” and “Jesus Called Me on My Cell Phone.”

Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical, “Altar Boyz” caused a sensation for over 2,000 performances. It has a book by Kevin Del Aguila, and music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker.

The Minnesota State Mankato production is directed by Department Chair Paul J. Hustoles, with musical direction by senior BFA Musical Theatre candidate Kim Steffen and choreography by senior Dance minor Lauren Looby. The “Boyz” are Adam Moen as “Mark” and Sam Stoll as “Luke,” who played “Roger” and “Mark,” respectively, in the season opener, “Rent”; Jake McInerney as “Matthew” and Jason Garton as “Juan,” two members of the “Rent” ensemble; and Carter Allen as “Abraham.”

Individual tickets for “Altar Boyz” are $22 regular, $19 for senior citizens, youth 16 and under and groups of 15 or more, and $15 for current Minnesota State students. They may be purchased online at the Department of Theatre, or by calling or stopping by the Theatre & Dance Box office between 4 and 6 p.m., Monday-Friday. Call 507-389-6661.
