Minnesota State Mankato's Humminbird Big Bobber Ice Fishing Contest, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, on Lake Washington, has been cancelled due to unsafe ice conditions.

Planning committee members made the decision Jan. 25 after taking into consideration ice conditions and the weather forecast and consulting with local officials. The committee unanimously decided to forego this year’s event.

The annual event is sponsored by the Minnesota State Mankato Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

"We are all disappointed with having to cancel this year’s tournament, but we have to put the safety of our staff, student athletes, volunteers and participants above everything else," said tournament director Mike Powicki, director of development for Intercollegiate Athletics.

"We had a lot of exciting things planned for this year’s Big Bobber; it was going to be our best tournament yet," Powicki said. "The committee is eager to begin planning for next year's tournament. The Big Bobber Ice Fishing Contest will be back."

Powicki said Big Bobber raffle prize winners will still be drawn at 3 p.m. at Westwood Bar and Grill on Feb. 4. The committee hopes to host a Big Bobber Cancellation Party at Westwood before the raffle drawing.
