Retired Air Force General Dan Cherry to speak at Aviation Alumni Banquet April 21

Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Dan Cherry will be the keynote speaker at Minnesota State Mankato’s 2012 Aviation Alumni Banquet on Saturday, April 21 at the Mankato Regional Airport.

Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Dan Cherry will be the keynote speaker at Minnesota State Mankato’s 2012 Aviation Alumni Banquet on Saturday, April 21 at the Mankato Regional Airport.

Cherry was a fighter pilot in Vietnam who shot down an enemy MiG fighter. Years later he met the pilot of the other aircraft and they became close friends. He wrote a book about this journey called “My Enemy, My Friend, a story of reconciliation from the Vietnam War.”

Alumni, current and prospective students, faculty and staff, parents and the public are invited to attend the aviation banquet. Cost of the dinner and all evening events is $10. Those interested in attending should register by calling (507) 389-6116.

The event will kick off with an Aviation Department all-class reunion at 4 p.m. at the Mankato Airport terminal building. It will be followed by a non-alcoholic social at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m. and a program, including Cherry’s talk, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

As part of the evening program, scholarships and internships earned by Aviation students will be announced. Representatives of the Aviation Club, Alpha Eta Rho, Flight Team and Women in Aviation will explain the missions of their clubs.

Minnesota State Mankato offers a bachelor’s degree in Aviation with concentrations in Professional Flight and Aviation Management. The degree focuses on professional flight (careers as airline pilots) and aviation business and management¸ and allows a properly flying-rated student to become a flight instructor with North Star Aviation after completing North Star requirements.
