“Steve, Mickey Mantle’s on Line 1!” is the name of the public address that USA Today senior golf writer Steve DiMeglio will present on Tuesday, April 24 at 4 p.m. in the Centennial Student Union’s Ostrander Auditorium at Minnesota State Mankato.

DiMeglio’s address is subtitled “An MSU grad’s journey from the White House to the House that Ruth Built to the Home of Golf.”

DiMeglio, a Mankato native and 1987 graduate of Minnesota State Mankato, began his writing career as sports editor at the MSU Reporter, followed by a stint as a Free Press sports intern. Before graduating in 1987 with a news-editorial mass communications major and history minor, DiMeglio shared a first place award from the Minnesota State Press Association for a KMSU radio show, “Sports Conversations,” he hosted with his father, Minnesota State Mankato history professor Dr. John DiMeglio.

The junior DiMeglio then spent six years as a sports reporter and then five more as a special projects reporter at the Desert Sun in Desert Springs, Calif. His work on issues such as the environment to immigration and education caught the attention of Gannett News Service and in 1999 he was hired as one of its regional correspondents. He covered Capitol Hill during both the William Clinton and George W. Bush presidencies.

In 2000, DiMeglio was hired by USA Today Sports Weekly to cover Major League Baseball and assist on some N.F.L games, including two Super Bowls. His work included analysis, teams and trends and player profiles. In his time there, he covered sports notables such as Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Derek Jeter.

In his current position, DiMeglio follows golfing legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer around the world. He has won numerous awards for his writing at the state, regional and national levels.
