Mankato, Minn. — A book titled “The First 40 Years: Building a Dental Hygiene Program” has been published by Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Dental Hygiene Department in conjunction with the department’s 40-year anniversary, which will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 29 during Homecoming 2012.

The book, written by free-lance writer Carol Jones, is dedicated to Robert Fonda, who started the dental hygiene program at Minnesota State Mankato in 1969. There were 15 graduates in the program’s first graduating class in 1972, and after 40 years, the program now has more than 800 graduates.

Fonda will be on hand to sign copies of the nearly 100-page book during a 5 p.m. social hour on Saturday, Sept. 29 in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom. The book is available free of charge to all alumni of Minnesota State Mankato’s dental hygiene program regardless of whether or not they attend the anniversary event.

The “coffee table” style book has six chapters and is filled with photos, lists of graduates and much more. Chapter One, titled “Humble Beginnings,” describes how Fonda started the dental hygiene program in the basement of Morris Hall with no office, no phone, no dedicated classroom, no support staff and no clinical lab. Other chapters describe the development of the University’s dental hygiene clinic and highlights of the program’s early years along with its commitment to community service and academic excellence.

For more information about the book or to request a copy, please contact Lynnette Engeswick, associate professor, at 507-389-1313 or by email at lynnette.engeswick@mnsu.edu.

The schedule for the Dental Hygiene Gala on Saturday, Sept. 29 in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom is as follows:

  •  4 p.m. Dental Hygiene Clinic Tour & Open Door Mobile Van Tour
  • 5 p.m. Social Hour with a cash bar (music by Garrett Steinberg and special appearance by Shelby Tweten, “American Idol” contestant)
