Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s American Indian Student Association is holding an event of contemporary and traditional American Indian values featuring the socially conscious comedy group, 1491s, and live music by Native American hip-hop artist Tall Paul on Tuesday, April 9.

This event will be held in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Seating begins at 5:30 p.m. Food and refreshments will be provided.

The 1491s is a sketch comedy group, based in the wooded ghettos of Minnesota and buffalo grass of Oklahoma. The Native American group is chock full of cynicism, with a dose of indigenous satire.

Paul Wenell Jr., also known as Tall Paul, is an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Ojibwe tribe from Minneapolis. He began writing rhymes at the age of 14 and is most known for his bi-lingual single, “Prayers in a Song,” which incorporates the Ojibwe language he studied at the University of Minnesota. In 2012, Wenell Jr. released a song every day the Minnesota Vikings played, prior to kick-off. The title of the series is “Ahead of the Game” and is available for free download on soundcloud.com.

American Indian Night is sponsored by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; the College of Arts and Humanities; American Indian Studies Program; American Indian Affairs; American Indian Student Association; Institutional Diversity and Hahn Huy Phan.

The American Indian Student Association brings a community of students together in a safe and familiar environment to learn and continue the practice of American Indian culture and traditions.
