Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State University, Mankato President Richard Davenport notified university staff today in an email message that the campus would remain open on Monday, Jan. 6.

Staff members should plan to report to work Monday. Staff members who feel that weather or road conditions would make it unsafe to travel to campus should consult with their supervisors, who may approve vacation time, compensatory time or leave without pay for those who are unable to safely travel to campus.

"As always, individual safety is our highest concern," Davenport wrote.

Minnesota State Mankato has no scheduled classes until Monday, Jan. 13, when the spring semester begins, so most students will not return to campus until the weekend of Jan. 11-12.

Faculty are on semester break, with the first scheduled faculty duty day set for Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Earlier today, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton ordered all K-12 public schools be closed on Monday, Jan. 6 as a result of forecasted dangerously cold weather. The National Weather Service is predicting that most of the state will experience the coldest temperatures in a decade with lows reaching -30 degrees and wind chills predicted to reach as low as -50 degrees.

Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive university with 15,409 students, is part of the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system, which comprises 31 state institutions.
