Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota Educators Partnership, a consortium of 10 partner school districts affiliated with Minnesota State University, Mankato’s College of Education, recently received a $150,000 Bush Foundation grant to support training for 140 teachers who serve as classroom mentors for Minnesota State Mankato teacher candidates.
The supplementary grant will provide funding between the spring of 2017 and fall of 2018 to support 140 classroom teachers who play crucial roles in teacher candidate development throughout the 10 partner school districts.
The 10 partner school districts include those in Mankato, Bloomington, Faribault, Owatonna, St. Peter and Waseca as well as the Centennial, Le Sueur-Henderson, Sibley East and Tri-City United school districts.
The intent of the grant is to help veteran teachers be even better at supporting college students in teacher preparation programs. The training is designed to deepen mentor teachers’ skills in coaching, observing and analyzing student work and lesson design and use those skills in collaborative conversations with teacher candidates and also colleagues.
According to Laura Bemel, interim director of the Center for School-University Partnerships at Minnesota State Mankato, serving as a mentor to a teacher candidate is a specialized role that requires a teacher to be not only a model of effective teaching, but a coach and guide for someone at the beginning of his/her career.
Training for the mentor teachers will be provided through a partnership with the New Teacher Center, a leading national agency in teacher development. The training will be conducted in two cohorts, with the first beginning in January 2017 and the second beginning in August 2017.
