April 7: ROTC Hall of Fame Induction
Retired Army Brig. Gen. Jeff Bertrang will be inducted into the Maverick Battalion Hall of Fame.

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Army ROTC program, the Maverick Battalion, will induct retired Army Brig. Gen. Jeff Bertrang of New Ulm, Minn., into the Maverick Battalion Hall of Fame in a 5 p.m. ceremony Friday, April 7 on campus in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom.
Joining Bertrang in speaking at the ceremony will be Lt. Col. Dennis Murphy, professor and chair of Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Military Science.
Bertrang, who retired from the military in 2012 after 29 years of service, currently serves as the superintendent of the New Ulm Public School system in New Ulm, Minn.
After enlisting in the Minnesota Army National Guard in 1983, Bertrang was commissioned as an officer in 1985 through the Army ROTC program at Minnesota State Mankato. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s degree in educational leadership and master’s degree in military studies.
During his military career, Bertrang commanded at all levels until his final assignment as assistant division commander-maneuver of the 34th Infantry Division, Minnesota Army National Guard. He served a tour of duty as the Division G3 in Kosovo and commanded Task Force 32 during the 2008 Republican National Convention in Saint Paul, Minn.
Bertrang also served in staff positions at the battalion, brigade, division and state levels, including serving as an assistant chief of staff, G3, 34th Infantry Division, Commander, 84th Troop Command in Minneapolis and as assistant adjutant general of the Minnesota Army National Guard.
Bertrang’s military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two Oak Leaf Clusters), the Minnesota State Active Duty Ribbon, the Minnesota State Service Ribbon (Roman Numeral XX), the Army Commendation Medal (three Oak Leaf Clusters) and more.
He has served as a teacher, principal and superintendent. In addition to his numerous military honors, Bertrang was named Minnesota High School Principal of the Year in 2009.
Minnesota State Mankato’s Maverick Battalion plans to hold annual Hall of Fame inductions. Nominees can be selected from three categories: alumni (commissionees) of the program, staff and cadre of the program and individuals who have provided significant support to the program.
The Department of Military Science at Minnesota State Mankato is part of the University’s College of Education.
