Mankato, Minn. –Minnesota State University, Mankato welcomed a fifth cohort of Mexican students since November 2014 to its campus Oct. 22, and the 13 students will return to their home institutions Friday, Nov. 17.
The students are participating in a four-week English language-training program conducted by the University’s Center for English Language Programs.
The Mexican Ministry of Public Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly sponsor the program.
This short-term program is one component of a major bilateral higher education initiative signed by the presidents of Mexico and the U.S. in spring 2013 that is formally referred to as “The Bilateral Forum on Higher Education, Innovation and Research” or the acronym FOBESII.
FOBESII is a broad-based, multifaceted effort that seeks to bring 100,000 Mexican students to U.S. colleges and universities over the next five years and to send 50,000 Americans to Mexican institutions.
The Mexican government covers the full cost of the students’ program of study in the U.S. and offers stipends to American students who want to study on short-term educational programs in Mexico. Additionally, other aspects of the program include the promotion of research collaboration and exchanges between U.S. and Mexican faculty, international internship opportunities for students from each country, and opportunities for Mexican students to pursue undergraduate and graduate degree programs at U.S. institutions.
Minnesota State Mankato also hosted cohorts of Mexican students in November 2014 (30 students), September 2015 (20 students), June 2016 (25 students) and November 2016 (eight Students).
