Junior hockey forward David Backes has been named to 2006 ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America Men's At-Large First Team.
Backes, who signed a professional contract with the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues following the 2005-06 campaign, becomes the 27th student-athlete in the history of Minnesota State Mankato to gain Academic All-America honors.
The electrical engineering major has a 4.00 grade-point average.
A native of Blaine, Minn., Backes tallied a career-high for points with 42 this season. He was named to the 2005-06 RBK Second Team All-America team, the 2005-06 All-WCHA Second Team, and was a member of the 2004-05 All-WCHA Third Team and a member of the 2003-04 WCHA All-Rookie Team.
The two-time WCHA All-Academic selection totalled 46-73--119 in 115 career games to rank 23rd on MSU's all-time scoring list.
