Some people have asked me recently how everything is going. As you might expect, I replied that I think our university community is moving forward positively on all fronts and doing an outstanding job of serving our constituents.
However, on a personal matter, I think it is important for you to know that I am having some health issues that are being addressed. Due to a slow deterioration of my kidney function, I will eventually need a kidney transplant. This is being fully explored at this time. My intent in sharing this information is not to cause any unnecessary alarm since the success rate for kidney transplants is extremely high today.
The primary observable symptoms are fatigue and occasional muscle and joint pain that occur at varying times. I am receiving appropriate treatment from the University of Minnesota Hospitals, one of the world's leading transplant centers.
Recovery from a kidney transplant will likely involve a three to four-week absence from campus. The medical team assures me that my prognosis is excellent. There are a couple of possible donors, who are "0 positive" blood type, and are being tested at this time. If a transplant is delayed, kidney dialysis would be necessary. Even then, I would continue working on a fairly normal schedule.
Please be assured that I will make certain everything is in good order for a smooth transition on campus when the surgery takes place. I have already talked with the Chancellor and Vice President Olson regarding my recommendation to have Scott serve in an "acting" presidential capacity during my short absence from campus.
This is not a sensitive topic for me to discuss, and I am very approachable if anyone wishes to talk about it with me. In fact, I probably could bore you for hours with the details.
What is important is that I am going to be healthy again in time and the university will continue to progress without missing a beat as we move forward with our very aggressive agenda and strategic plan. I am most thankful there is excellent treatment for my condition. Thank you very much for your understanding and support.
Sincerely,

Richard Davenport
