Dear MSU Community Members:
As we approach homecoming weekend there is an increased aura of excitement and school spirit present. Many events are planned for your enjoyment and participation. Last year's homecoming, while an excellent opportunity to gather with friends and alumni to support MSU, was clouded by a civil disturbance that occurred near campus on Saturday evening. While there were clearly more bystanders than participants, the number of people gathered cast a negative light on the University Community. For several months following the event, the image we have sought to portray at MSU was overshadowed by reports of property damage, arrests, and injury. I am writing to you today to persuade you to join the faculty and staff in promoting a positive image of your institution.
Consumption of alcohol was perceived as a major contributing factor to last year's civil disturbance. We know at MSU, that of the students who consume alcohol, most do so responsibly. Let's not let a few, whose behaviors are inappropriate, become the ringleaders for observers. If a gathering occurs and behavior becomes uncivil, please leave the area immediately and report what is occurring. As a campus community we all have to make the choice to be part of the problem or part of the solution. By staying to observe, you become part of the problem, even if that is not your intention. By simply walking away, you become part of the solution. It is my responsibility to remind you that if you choose to participate in inappropriate behavior, severe consequences can be expected ranging from University disciplinary suspension to expulsion for riotous acts along with criminal charges and felony prosecution. Students cited for alcohol violations can anticipate a court ordered fine of $162 for underage consumption, $250 for a false I.D., and legal costs starting at $5,467 for a first time DWI. Students are reminded that DWIs, minor consumptions, and charges stemming from riotous behavior stay on a person's criminal record forever.
I hope you will join me this year in participating in homecoming festivities—"MSU Under the Stars." The 2004 homecoming celebrations provide opportunities for all of us to demonstrate pride in MSU, a modern university, by participating in the numerous week-long planned activities. I am confident that the MSU community is primarily comprised of mature, responsible citizens who do not want the campus reputation tainted by negative events that overshadow all of the positive features of MSU. Thank you in advance for your assistance in making homecoming a fun and safe weekend for all and for demonstrating Maverick pride.
