Communiqué #2 to the Campus Community

An executive search firm has been retained to assist in the presidential search. Academic Search is a non-profit organization that has assisted colleges and universities in more than 400 presidential searches. Dr. Ted Lewis, the individual with whom the search committee will be working, has had a 30-year career in higher education. He was an associate dean at Cornell University for several years and from 1983 to 1996 was president of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a public liberal arts college and Maryland’s only honors college.

Dr. Lewis will be on campus September 6 and 7 to meet with the MSU community. I encourage you to share with him your candid insights into the present status and needs of the University and your views on the kind of leadership we are seeking. He will be asking three fundamental questions: What are the strengths of this university? What are the 3-5 priorities the next president should pursue? What are the characteristics and qualifications needed in your next president? Of course, what you tell Dr. Lewis will be shared with the search committee and, ultimately, with the president-elect in such a way as not to compromise the identity of any source.

Dr. Lewis’ schedule is detailed below. Please make every effort to meet with him as your input is important.
