Common Registration Problems

There are many possible reasons for being unable to enroll in a class. Some of the most common reasons are listed below, along with the error message given and possible solutions to the problem.

 

The course is closed. (error message: 13 Requested course is full)

  • The number of people the course was originally created to hold are enrolled, so there are no seats left. You would need to contact the instructor to see if they will allow you to register for the class even though it is full.

The course requires special permission from the instructor. (error message: 12 Course requires special permission)

  • Some courses are set up so that the instructor can monitor exactly who enrolls in the class. These courses require special permission from the instructor in order to enroll. You would need to contact the instructor to see whether they will make it possible for you to register.

The course is a laptop course. (error message: 24 Student program required for this course)

  • Most College of Business courses require laptop computers and the IT Initiative Form to be completed in order to register for them. This form is available online at the College of Business website.

The course is upper division. (error message: 24 Student program required for this course)

  • Courses numbered in the 300's and 400's are considered upper division. These courses can only be enrolled in, if you have permission to take upper division courses. This permission is obtained from the department of your major and/or the student relations coordinator for the college of your major.

The course is an Engineering course. (error message: 24 Student program required for this course)

  • Many Engineering courses can only be enrolled in, if you have permission. This permission is obtained from the College of Science, Engineering and Technology--see the student relations coordinator for that college.

The course is graduate level. (error message: 21 Admission Status required for this course)

  • Undergraduate students are not able to register for courses numbered in the 500's or 600's, which are graduate level. Normally, there are courses at the 400 level running parallel to 500 level courses that you can register for instead.
  • If you wish to become a graduate student, contact the College of Graduate Studies and Research.

Your are not fully admitted to the University. (error message: 21 Admission Status required for this course)

  • Undergraduate students should contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Graduate students should contact the College of Graduate Studies and Research.

The course requires prerequisites or tests. (error message: 58 Student must take/pass test or satisfy course pre-reqs)

  • Some departments have courses for which you cannot register unless you have completed other courses or have completed and passed various tests.
  • You would need to contact the department responsible for the course to see whether they will lift the prerequisite/test requirement, making it possible for you to register.

You have a hold preventing registration. (error message: 6 Student on hold)

  • You would need to contact the office responsible for the hold to see whether they will lift the hold, making it possible for you to register.
  • Various holds include:
    • 01 Academic Probation (contact the student relations coordinator for your college or the Office of First Year Experience, if you have not declared a major)
    • 02 Academic Suspension (contact the Office of Academic Affairs)
    • 05 Immunization
      • new students should contact the Office of Admissions (undergraduate or graduate)
      • others should contact the Office of the Registrar
      • an Immunization form is available online
    • 031 Unpaid Balance (check your account status online, where you also have the option of paying these balances)
    • 032 Admissions Office (contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions)
    • 033 International Insurance (contact the International Student Office)

The course requires a minimum GPA in order to register . (error message: 25 Minimum GPA required for this course)

  • You would need to contact the department offering the course or their advising center/student relations coordinator.

You cannot enroll in more credits. (error message: 26 Exceeds maximum credits allowed for this course)

  • The maximum number of credits students may be enrolled in for Fall, Spring, or Summer terms, is governed by the following:
    • Undergraduate Students
      • Maximum of 18 credits without any permission
      • 19-21 credits with overload permission of your faculty advisor and department chair
      • 22-24 credits with overload permission of your faculty advisor, department chair, and college dean
      • 25-27 credits with overload permission of your faculty advisor, department chair, college dean, and Vice President for Academic Affairs
      • 28 or more credits only under exceptional circumstances with the permission of the Office of Academic Affairs
    • Graduate Students
      • Maximum of 12 credits without any permission
      • 13 or more credits with overload permission of your major advisor and the Graduate Dean
  • There are forms for both undergraduates and graduates available online that are used to gather the permissions necessary to take more credits.

The Registration Help Center of the Office of the Registrar, located on the first floor of the Wigley Administration Center, is always available to help you with any of the above situations, answer any of your registration questions, and assist you with whatever registration issues arise.
