One of the ways that undergraduate students can improve their GPA is to repeat courses--retaking the same course or a course judged to be similar enough to be considered the same. When this is done and reported to the Office of the Registrar, the last course taken will retain its earned credits and be included in the GPA. The previous course (or courses, if the same class has been repeated before), will no longer earn credit and not be included in GPA calculations.
There is no limit to the number of different courses that may be repeated. However, any particular course can only be repeated twice. In other words, a given course can only be taken at most three times--the first completion of the course and two repeats of that same course.
This policy only applies to courses taken at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
It is worth noting that even though courses are repeated and removed from the GPA, they still are shown on transcripts with their grades. Repeated courses also count as attempted credits and affect a student's completion rate.
In order to initiate the process described above, students must turn in a repeated course form after they have completed retaking the course. This form is available at the Campus Hub, the Office of the Registrar, or online.
It is also the case that during the registration process a student may be prohibited from enrolling in a course, if they have already taken the course three times.
Repeats involving transfer work must be approved by the department of content of the courses. Students should inquire of those content departments and utilize the same form mentioned above in their inquiry process.
The above policy is a change from the previous repeat policy and is effective Spring Semester of the 2007-2008 academic year.
The complete details of the new policy can be found here. For further information, visit the Academic Affairs website and/or call them at (507) 389-1333.
Appeals to this policy are to be made using the Course Repeat Appeal Form available online.
