DARS Example Audit

The following is a partial listing of both Minnesota State University, Mankato and transfer courses seen at the beginning of an audit.

F 01 FYEX100 1.00 P First Year Seminar
F 01 GEOGTRF 4.00 TC World Regional Geography
        INVER : GEOG1100
F 01 GEOL121 3.00 TC Physical Geology
        INVER : GEOL1101
F 00 HIST151 3.00 A African-American History

Note that whenever courses are shown on an audit, their information is displayed in the order shown--term taken, department or subject of the course, course number, credits, grade, and title.

Also note that transfer courses are listed via their Minnesota State University, Mankato equivalent, with the original course number and title appearing on the right side. Transfer courses display the originating school and their grades are always prefaced with a "T". In the above example, GEOG1100 from Inver Hills is listed as the course GEOGTRF--meaning that it is a geography course taken in transfer, but has no equivalent here.

Next is the beginning of the general education area, specifically the total credits.

******** GENERAL EDUCATION TOTAL CREDITS ********
A total of 44 general education credits and categories 1-11
must be completed to satisfy the General Education Program
at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
******NOTE******
8/2 RULE
NO MORE THAN 8 CREDITS OR 2 COURSES (WHICHEVER IS GREATER)
IN GENERAL EDUCATION MAY COME FROM THE SAME DISCIPLINE.

General education encompasses a large number of courses, of which students need a minimum of 44 credits distributed across 13 different categories. Often students end up taking more general education courses than are needed, simply because so many courses are considered part of general education.

GENERAL EDUCATION: 44 credits required.
EARNED: 49.0 CREDITS
******** WARNING ********
Possible violation of the 8/2 Rule (see NOTE: 8/2 RULE above)
with regard to the following discipline
F 02 HLTH210 3.00 B First Aid & CPR
F 02 HLTH212 3.00 A Consumer Health Issues
F 02 HLTH310 3.00 B Drug Education

The total credit portion for general education on the audit lists all of the courses taken that are considered general eduation courses. However, because of the 8/2 rule (no more than 8 credits or 2 courses can be from the same department), not all of those credits can necessarily be applied toward the 44 needed. In this particular case, since there are too many HLTH courses, 3 credits will have to be deducted.

The other component needed to satisfy the general education requirement is to have all of the required categories fulfilled. The individual categories follow the total credit component on the audit.

This is general education category 9, which had no courses placed into it. Note that the requirement displays "NO", signifying that it has not been completed, and that it tells you what the requirement is along with the courses that can be taken to fulfill it.
