Academic Affairs, in conjunction with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, determines articulation agreements between Minnesota State University, Mankato and other schools and sets the guidelines for transfer evaluation. The Transfer Evaluation Department in the Office of the Registrar uses those rules to perform the evaluations. Some of the policies/procedures include:
There are basically two components to the issue of credit transfer:
- Will Minnesota State University, Mankato accept coursework from a particular institution?
- If coursework is accepted, how will it fit into the curriculum--what will it replace or be used for?
The answers to those two questions are presented to students in the form of either:
- a hand-written evaluation sheet (for students admitted to the University prior to Fall 2003)
- a transfer evaluation audit (generated by DARS for students admitted from Fall 2003 onward)
Evaluations are composed and sent via U.S. mail to admitted transfer students whenever transcripts from other institutions are received. These documents show the number of credits accepted in transfer and how the classes were used in general education. Many classes are given equivalents (the Minnesota State University, Mankato courses they are considered to be the same as), while others are simply shown as being "generic" (ie: MATHTRF is a "generic" mathematics course).
Students can also obtain copies of their transfer evaluation audit at the Campus Hub or from the Student Relations Coordinator of their college.
In order for transfer courses to be given an equivalent they have to be examined and the equivalent approved by the Minnesota State University, Mankato department offering courses in that same subject area.
Transfer work is automatically used in students' majors or minors only if those courses have been given approved equivalencies by departments. If students believe that particular transfer courses should have been placed within their major or minor areas, they are encouraged to inquire with those departments concerning the use of these courses. This is especially true for those classes shown as being "generic" on the transfer audit. There is a ([PDF] transfer equivalency form (430 KiB) online or at the departments) used for this process.
A similar process is used when students have repeated courses involving transfer work. The decision as to whether two transfer courses or a transfer course and a Minnesota State University, Mankato course are to be considered repeats of each other is made by the department of content. There is a ([PDF] repeated course form (392 KiB) online or at the departments) used for this process.
There are departmentally approved equivalency guides which relate courses from certain colleges and universities to Minnesota State University, Mankato courses. These guides are composed by the Undergraduate Admissions Office and can be found at their site.
Students having concerns about their transfer evaluation and/or wishing to appeal the results of the evaluation should first contact the Transfer Evaluation Department in the Office of the Registrar. If further appeals are desired, the student should next contact the supervisor of the Transfer Evaluation Department. Should further appeals be found necessary, the University's Office of Academic Affairs would be the next appropriate contact. The final level of appeal would be to the MnSCU System Academic Appeals Review Panel. Information specific to the student's particular situation may be solicited at each level of the above appeal process and departmental contact may also be required.
