SUBMISSIONS TO THE CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

The electronic Conference Proceedings can accommodate diverse types of presentations. Submissions may follow a traditional hard copy format, one primarily associated with academic research papers, or a web-authored format which is specifically designed to take advantage of an electronic environment. Regardless of the format, all authors should develop the Conference Proceedings submission so that anyone who views the electronic presentation has a clear understanding of the research or creative endeavor which was undertaken. Authors may select from any of the formats presented in the right hand column or work with the editorial staff of the Conference Proceedings to develop another type suited to the particular research. If you are interested in developing a format which is not included on the list below, contact Dr. Trenton Vorlicek or Dr. Gina Wenger.

Potential Submission Formats

Formal research paper/Professional report

A traditional academic research paper or professional report (such as one written for an internship, a special project, or an organization) may be submitted. Students should follow the practices of their disciplines or the demands of the particular situation for which the report was developed.

A formal research article format might include the following: abstract, introduction, literature review, materials and methods, results, discussion, references. When incorporating citations, students should use a format acceptable to their discipline (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.).

A report for a profit or non-profit organization might include a summary, discussion, and recommendations. The format should consist of whatever is appropriate for the situation.

Students might also consider a web format for the submission. For example, a traditional bibliography might be replaced or expanded with links to other significant websites; or video-clips which demonstrate or expand upon the research might be incorporated.

Poster session material report

Students who wish to submit their poster session material may choose either a traditional or a web-based approach. One possibility would be for students to include the following in a submission: a written (or oral) description which contextualizes the scholarship, and a digitized photograph of the poster board used during the session.

PowerPoint or other presentation software report

Students may also submit a copy of their presentation software slides. As with the other types of submissions, students should make sure that an outside viewer could access the submission and have a clear understanding of the research or creative activity. This may mean that students would have to prepare and submit a brief introduction (written or oral) to set the stage for the slides.

Performance clip

Performance clips are well-suited to creative activity scholarship such as that associated with music, speech, and theater: a one-minute clip of a dance, a speech, or a musical performance could be submitted. To contextualize this type of performance, students should prepare introductory and perhaps concluding comments to accompany the clip.

Performance clips might also be made of students speaking at either the poster or oral presentation sessions at the Conference. Again, this type of clip would need to be contextualized with introductory and perhaps concluding comments attached.

Graphic-based report dealing with artwork or design material

Because some presentations could depend largely upon graphics, students might consider developing a report which includes, for example, a series of photographs with appropriate explanations included. For other projects, “before and after“ pictures might provide the basis for a submission.
