Margaret R. Preska Residence Community

In addition to the semi-suites available in the Julia Sears Residence Community, 300 additional semi-suites spaces will open in the fall of 2012. Our newest residence community will provide housing for nearly 500 students in semi-suite and renovated-style housing. The community will have four halls: I (currently McElroy I Hall but will be a part of Preska beginning next year), J, K, and L. All of the modern semi-suites in J, K, and L Halls have two bedrooms and a full, compartmentalized bathroom. Most of the semi-suites house four residents, and a limited number single semi-suites are available. Renovated rooms in I Hall offer traditional double rooms. The main floor of this community includes classrooms, the First Year Experience office, and gathering spaces, with residential spaces on floors two, three, and four of J, K, and L Halls and floors one through four in I Hall. This community is adjacent to Carkoski Commons, providing indoor access to the Carkoski Dining Hall.

Gage Decommissioned

The two 12-story towers of Gage will no longer be used for on-campus housing beginning the 2012-2013 academic year.

Limited Single Rooms

To increase the number spaces available on campus, many single rooms currently in Crawford and McElroy will be converted to double rooms this summer. All rooms, including single rooms, are available on a first-come, first-served basis during Room Selection. Students requiring a single room for medical reasons should read more about Special Accommodations or contact the Department of Residential Life for additional information.

Floor Designations

We will no longer apply common interest designations (Quiet Study, Upperclass, etc.) to any of our floors.

Maverick Mentor Program

In addition to the Community Advisor (CA) on each floor in the Crawford Residence Community, each floor will also have a Maverick Mentor. Mentors are upperclass students at MSU and assist residents in their academic transition to college. Both freshmen and upperclass students are invited to live on any floor in Crawford.

Tobacco and Smoke Free Campus

All floors in the Minnesota State Mankato Residence Halls are smoke-free, and beginning May 16, 2012, the Minnesota State University, Mankato policy prohibiting smoking, tobacco use, and tobacco sale (including the use or sale of smokeless tobacco products) on property or in vehicles it owns, operates, or leases goes into effect for residence hall residents. Residents will still have the opportunity to indicate if they are smokers or if they object to rooming with a smoker. Every attempt will be made to room smokers with other smokers and grant objection requests.
