Important Winter Dates and Information

Here’s what residents need to know before leaving for Winter Break. The information is also in the flier distributed in resident mailboxes mid-November.
 

Halls Closed

The residence halls close for Winter Break at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 9 and reopen for Spring Semester at 8:00 a.m. Friday, January 6. 

 

 

Suite Residents: Be Prepared for Winter Bathroom Inspections

 

 

Residents with in-room bathrooms can avoid potential cleaning charges by having bathrooms ready for Winter Break inspections. Bathrooms that do not meet the inspection guidelines will be cleaned by University staff, and roommates will be held jointly responsible for cleaning charges. Watch your mailbox for cleaning tips to help you. Inspections are scheduled for

  •  Monday, December 12:           Julia Sears 4th floor
                                                         Crawford
                                                         Gage
                                                         McElroy
  • Tuesday, December 13:           Julia Sears 3rd floor
  •  Wednesday, December 14:    Julia Sears 2nd floor
  • Thursday, December 15:          Julia Sears 1st floor.

Graduating or Leaving Campus?

If you plan to leave the University for any reason, including graduation, you must complete and turn in a Contract Release form to the Residential Life Office no later than 4:30 p.m. Monday, November 28.  After this day, approved Contract Release requests are subject to an additional $20 administrative charge.  See page 32 of you Residence Hall Student Guide or online at www.mnsu.edu/reslife for more information about contract releases and situations under which releases are granted.

Graduating or Have a Final on Saturday?

If you are participating in graduation events or have a saturday final, please contact your Area Director by Tuesday, December 6 to stay in your room until 5:00 p.m. saturday, December 10.

Getting a New Roommate

If you are currently living alone in a room for two residents (or there is a vacant space in your triple room), or if your current roommate is not returning for Spring Semester, you will be assigned a new roommate.  So, before you leave for break, make sure that a bed, a desk, a desk chair, and closet space are avilable for your new roommate and that your room is clean.  Failure to do so may resut in a minimum cleaning charge of $30.00 and a conduct hearing.  The Department of Residential Life will notify you by e-mail over the break when you are assigned a roomate.

Staying on Campus During Winter Break

Register in the Residential Life Office between Monday, November 7 and Friday, December 2 to be eligible for the early sign-up rate of $280.  Those who register after December 2 pay $305. All current residents who will also live on campus spring semester may stay during the break.  Payment must be made in full at the time of registration either by check, cash or credit card.  Students may also request to have the charge added to their MSU account.   If you are changing rooms for spring semester, you must move to your spring room before the break begins.  The halls close for Winter Break at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 9.  The halls reopen for returning students at 8:00 a.m. Friday, January 6.

Leaving Your Car On Campus Over Winter Break

Only resident who are registered to stay in the halls over Winter Break may keep their cars in on-campus parking lots.  If you are going home over break you must take your car with you or find other parking arrangements.  Unregistered cars may be subject to towing.

Keep Your Things Safe!

  1. Remove all valuable items from your room. We are unable to assume liability for the loss of personal belongings left in your room.
  2. Turn off and unplug computers and peripherals and all other electrical items in your room except refrigerators and aquariums.
  3. Remove all perishable items from your refrigerator. If you unplug your refrigerator, please defrost it and leave the refrigerator door open.
  4. Take all plants and fish home. If this is impossible, aquarium equipment may be left plugged in. The University assumes no liability for fish or plants left in the room.
  5. Gage Residents: Make sure your smoke detector has a battery and is working. You will be charged repair or replacement costs if your smoke detector is inoperable or missing a battery. Batteries are available at the Gage front desk.
  6. Make sure all windows are closed and locked.
  7. Close the blinds if you live on the first floor.
  8. Take out your garbage.
  9. Turn all lights off.
  10. Close and lock the door.
