Economic vitality :
Average earnings from farming, 2006
Farming is generally considered a low-income occupation, but it can also be quite volatile. In 2006 average earnings for farming in Minnesota were $14,452, down from $18,092 in 2005, $15,955 in 2004, and $15,000 in 2000, but up from $9,000 in 2003. Farm income is dependent on many factors, including the weather, global markets and government payments from disasters. The highest earnings are found in the very productive counties of western and southern Minnesota, where farms tend to be large and mechanized, but in 2006 average earnings exceeded the state's average wage for all jobs in only one county, Watonwan.
