Self-employed businesses, 2006

Small businesses form the backbone of the state's economy, with establishments of fewer than 10 employees making up nearly three-quarters of the state's businesses. While a high number of self-employed businesses show up in the metro counties, the real core are in central and north central MInnesota. These are businesses that generated enough income to pay taxes, but do not have any paid employees.
