Income & Poverty :
Children in poverty, 2005

In the Census Bureau definition of poverty, the income threshold is raised for each additional child, meaning that families with many children can fall within poverty guidelines at higher incomes than smaller families. A prevalance of low-paying jobs and the volatile farm economy can be factors, also. However, those counties with the highest poverty rates may not correspond to those with the highest rates of public assistance. The percentage of children under age 18 in poverty was estimated at 11.6% for Minnesota in 2005.
