Public safety :
Fatal motor vechicle accidents, 2006
Rural areas have higher ratios of fatal crashes, due in part to people driving at higher speeds on roads without interstate-style safety designs, but also due to larger distances emergency responders must travel to respond to an accident. Injury and property damage crashes are more common in urban areas.
The ratio used for this map is the number of incidents per 100,000 residents. This ratio makes it possible to compare the crime rates in counties with very small populations to those with very large populations. It should not, however, be confused with the actual number of incidents reported, which can be much smaller or much larger, depending on the population of the county. |
