The South Central/Southwest Minnesota Regional Science & Engineering Fair Program is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) Program. Rules are set-forth by Intel ISEF apply to the Middle School/Senior High School Division.
Minnesota State University has a Scientific Review Committee/Institutional Review Board (SRC/IRB). The purpose of this committee is to check student projects for compliance with the Intel ISEF and regional fair rules. The committee for the 2010-2011 year was Mr. Bix Baker, Dr. Roger Nelson, Mr. Gary Klimmek, Dr. Bill Bessler, Dr. Penny Knoblich and Mrs. Mary Van Duynhoven.
CHANGES & MODIFICATIONS FOR 2012
Elgibility:
- At Intel ISEF, team projects will now compete in the scientific category of their research and will no longer be a separately judged category.
- Each Intel ISEF-affiliated fair may send the number of projects provided by their affiliation agreement. There is no longer a restriction within this set number of how many may be individual projects or team projects.
- Sixth graders are eligible to compete at State as long as they participate at the Middle School/Senior High Division.
Human Subjects:
- The term, human subjects, has been changed to human participants.
V ertebrate Ani mals:
- Zebrafish embryos are not considered vertebrate animals until 7 days (168 hours) post fertilization.
Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents:
- Laboratory studies culturing KPC (Klebsiella pneumonia) must be conducted in a BSL-2 laboratory in Registered Research Institution with documented IBC review and approval.
- Self-Sampling of capillary blood for analysis can be conducted in a home setting (e.g. glucometer reading)
