Immunizations

Minnesota law requires that students born after 1956 must be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, and rubella in order to be enrolled at Minnesota State University, Mankato. For further information about this law, including specific exemptions, contact the Office of Admissions at 507-389-1822.  These immunizations are available at the Student Health Services.

Here are the Immunizations required for admission to Minnesota State University, Mankato:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td): Once every ten years.  We recommend, when updating Td, to substitute the Tdap once for protection against pertussis for a minimal upcharge.
  • Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR): One dose given on or after first birthday. For complete protection against measles, a SECOND MMR is recommended.
  • If these requirements are not met, the immunizations are available at Student Health Services.

In addition to the immunizations required by law, it is recommended that students also consider the following immunizations:

  • Meningococcal vaccine (meningitis):  One time vaccine to cover years spent in college.  Available vaccines include Mennomune and Menactra.  Menactra may provide longer immunity.
  • Influenza (flu shot): One dose every fall, especially for those at high risk; asthma, heart/lung disease, on drugs which decrease immunity.
  • Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria/acellular Pertussis):  New recommendation which adds pertussis (whooping cough) booster to the Td vaccine.  A one time booster is given instead of the next scheduled Td booster.
  • Pneumococcal (pneumonia shot): One-time vaccine, especially for those at high risk (adults 65 and over, people with chronic illnesses, spleen removal).
  • Hepatitis A:  New recommendation of 2 doses 6-12 months apart.  Especially important for people traveling outside of the United States.
  • Hepatitis B:  Recommended for everyone. Many children now receive this shot as a routine part of child immunization plans.   Series of 3 vaccinations over 6 months.  Catch up vaccinations are available.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox): Many students will have had the chickenpox before enrolling at MSU. Adults who have not had the chickenpox should have 2 doses of the vaccine at least one month apart.
  • Polio: Most students have received this immunization series during childhood. Adults living in the United States who never received or completed this immunization series during childhood do not need to be vaccinated unless they will be traveling to areas where exposure is likely.
  • Gardasil:  Vaccine for girls/women age 9-26 that helps protect against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).  HPV causes genital warts and is the most common cause of cervical cancer.  Immunity requires 3 doses over 6 months.  For more information please visit www.GARDASIL.com or download a document containing information on [PDF] Gardasil (8 KiB).
  • Travel Immunizations/medications:  Immunizations and medications may be recommended or required depending on travel locations outside of the United States.  Common immunizations/medications include; Hepatitis A/B, Influenza, Meningitis, Typhoid, Malaria, and Polio.  Yellow Fever vaccine is currently not available at the Student Health Services.  It is recommended to schedule an appointment to discuss the appropriate immunizations/medications AT LEAST 4-6 weeks before departure.

These vaccinations are available at the Student Health Services.  Some must be paid for at the time of immunization and some may be covered by your insurance plan.

Lab

The Student Health Services Lab can perform both simple and complex laboratory tests including tests for Strep, pregnancy tests, urinalysis tests, blood tests, and STD screenings. Most results are available within 15 to 20 minutes. Highly complex tests are sent to a reference laboratory, with most results available within 24 to 48 hours. There is a small fee for laboratory tests.

All laboratory tests must be ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner. Laboratory orders are accepted from referring physicians and results can be mailed, faxed or phoned to the referring physician.

The Student Health Services lab is fully accredited by the nationally recognized Commission of Office Laboratory Assessment (COLA). We are staffed by a certified Medical Technologist and a certified Laboratory Technician.

Medical Emergencies

During regular office hours, medical emergencies can be assessed at Student Health Services.

Students seeking medical care for emergencies after hours, on weekends, or when classes are not in session have several options. Students on campus may call University Security at 389-2111, or go to the emergency room at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital, 1025 Marsh Street. Students off campus may call 911 or go to the emergency room at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital. Students are responsible for any fees charged at the hospital.

Cost

There is a $15 or $25 office visit fee (depending on complexity) for students using Student Health Servics Medical Clinic. Additional fees are charged for physical exams, laboratory tests, prescriptions, special supplies, and medical procedures. The fees charged at Student Health Services are typically less than would be charged at off-campus medical facilities. Charges are kept as low as possible to make Student Health Services financially accessible for as many students as possible.

Students are responsible for any charges at Student Health Services. Payment is expected within 30 days. Patients receive an itemized bill and insurance receipt at the time of their appointment. Nonpayment of Student Health Services charges will result in registration/records holds and, if needed, professional collection.

HIV Testing

Student Health Services provides confidential HIV testing. The test is available to any MSU student. It is important to understand that it is required that both the request for the test and the results of the test will be recorded in the student's medical record. If a transfer of medical records to another medical facility, insurance company, or employer is requested, this information will be included. This may cause concern on the part of future insurers or employers.

Two appointments are necessary for HIV testing, one for the test and one to discuss the results.

Students having HIV testing done at Student Health Services can expect their test results in approximately ten days.
