A philanthropy is a community service project where you are helping out a local or national organization
National Philanthropies:
Special Olympics was adopted by Alpha Sigma Alpha in 1976.
S. June Smith Center provides early identification, education, training and therapy to infants with developmental disabilities and delays. The S. June Smith Center is located in Lancaster, PA. We send them whatever they need that we can help them with such as cards, placemats, and coloring books. We have been working with them since 1990.
Local Philanthropy:
Yellow ribbon The Zeta Kappa chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha works with community members to fundraise, and donate our time to aid in suicide prevention.
Gamma Phi's work with many charities and philanthropies throughout the year. Gamma Phi Beta's national philanthropy is Campfire USA, which was adopted in 2002. Campfire USA provides grants for young girls who would otherwise not be able to attend camp. In the 2002-2003 year chapters contributed over $38,500 to over 50 camps. Our chapter has done various things for campfire USA, last year we decorated post cards for campers to send home to their parents while they were away at camp.
Additionally the Gamma Pi chapter works locally with the Sexual Violence Resource Center. Each semester our chapter puts on a fundraiser to benefit the center. In the past we have had a Chili feed, which raised over $1300, and a 50's themed Build-A-Burger feed.
Sigma's philanthropy is the Robbie Page Memorial. This was formed because a former president's son was diagnosed with polio and we raised money to find a cure. Since the cure has been found now we raise money for children's play therapy rooms at the Children's Medical Center in Dallas Texas and at the University of North Caroline Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
At Alpha Chi Omega's 1992 National Convention, delegates voted to adopt the Support of Victims of Domestic Violence as a national altruistic project.
The Foundation supports educational programs for victims of domestic violence as well as hands-on support at the local community level where personal involvement can make a difference. Grants go to various agencies across the nation providing services to victims as well as to provide development and implementation of educational programs for members.
In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Founders Day, Alpha Chi Omega's are encouraged to participate in events in their communities during the month of October.
