QUESTION ABOUT ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES:
Our department has increased our assessment activities by
doing the following:
Conducted a survey of employers of
alums who have graduate in the last two years. Awarded a grant to conduct the
survey.
ONE-MINUTE SUMMARIES:
- For
the Department, the highlight or most important feature or accomplishment
of the period between July 1, 2003 and May 14, 2004 is:
Heather Kaiser (undergraduate
speech communication major) was named an AFA-NIET All-American. As noted in an
MSU press release of April 19, 2004, “Minnesota State
University, Mankato forensics team member Heather Jean
Kaiser is one of 14 students nationwide selected to the 2004 American Forensic
Association-National Individual Events Tournament All-American Team.
The AFA-NIET competition was held
earlier this month at California State University,
Long Beach. It
is the third time in four years that an MSU student has been chosen for
All-American honors. Selection is based on a student’s academic standing,
community service and competitive success in forensics.
Kaiser, an MSU senior who grew up in Mankato and now lives in Apple Valley, will graduate May 8 with a
double major in political science and speech communication. She has been a
member of the Maverick forensics team for four years.
She is president of Golden Key International
Honour* Society, a 2003-‘04 Truman and Reta Wood Community Leadership Scholar,
a volunteer speech coach at Mankato West High School, a YMCA Brother/Sister
mentor, and a volunteer for Theresa House, the Echo Food Drive and Walk for
Diabetes. For three years she participated in the Undergraduate Research
Conference. After graduation she plans to attend law school.
Other 2004 All-Americans are from California State University, Oregon
State, West Texas A & M, Wartburg College, Northwestern, Morehouse
College, Seton Hall, Southern Utah,
Miami University-Ohio, Northern Illinois, the University
of Alabama, Tennessee
State and George Mason
University.
- The
most important issue facing the Department as we move from one year to the
next (June 30, July 1) is:
Space issues in the department
remain a top priority. The department is severely crunched for space on three
fronts: (1) We have three classrooms for priority scheduling. Those three
classrooms serve 12 fulltime faculty and 17 teaching assistants. We are
continually “begging” the Dean’s Office for additional instructional space each
semester. (2) TA office space is too small to serve the number of TAs in the
department. As noted in a memo sent to the Dean in the Fall of 2003, “currently
have 19 TAs, GAs and adjunct faculty crammed into one small room that also
serves as the department computer lab and workspace. This is simply inhumane
for graduate students, and most likely in violation of FERPA, as student grades
and other academic issues are discussed in the presence of whoever happens to
be in the room at the time that a TA and student are having a conference.” (3)
The department is still need of space for a communication lab. Other MNSCU
universities (e.g., Bemidji and Moorhead) have communication labs. Our
department has been requesting space for
a communication lab for a number of years with little results. The
communication lab, as noted in a memo sent to the Dean in Fall 2003 would serve
the entire university population, provide resources for students suffering from
communication apprehension, provide appropriate access to technology not
available elsewhere on campus, and provide resources for ESL students.
