Meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m.
Welcome and Introductions
The meeting began with a welcome by Mike. Thank you to Gregg for hosting today’s meeting. Introductions followed. Special thanks to Kathy Knudson-Mestnik who is resigning her position- thank you for all your years of work- these are truly appreciated!
The minutes of the September 20, 2001 Board of Governors’ meeting were approved.
Reports:
Treasurer: CTAM currently has 265 members. The recent mailing was successful bringing in another15-20 members. Bills are being paid through the CTAM Foundation for CTAM on the Road. Foundation account is roughly $55,000. Mike is working on a proposal and application process for people to receive grants from the Foundation. Larry mentioned the possibility of starting a program to recognize excellence in speech, debate and theater programs. Discussion followed and plans are still being formulated. Possibility of offering grants, CTAM scholarships or summer camps was discussed with the additional benefit of increasing CTAM visibility.
Historian: In absentia, Cindy is seeking ideas for the next newsletter article. Suggestion was made to include a list of past recipients for Outstanding Individual Awards.
Journal: In absentia. Everyone is encouraged to keep sending in submissions.

Central States and NCA: Tom reported that despite the fact that he has been on the Board for 12 years this is his first year on the Advisory Council. He attends the national conference in November and the regional meeting in April. Tom detailed information he presented about CTAM. Two panels from the annual CTAM conference, Bethany Lutheran (theater panel) and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be showcased at the April regional meeting in Milwaukee.
Board Members Reports: Kathleen Maloney distributed new issues of the Art Beat journal, “Choosing the Arts”- about art-focussed school options. A reminder that the Alliance for Arts in Education can be tapped for information about issues in arts advocacy. Members also get emails about special activities and issues. Discussion followed. This is the type of organization that could help build arguments for supporting the arts, especially in terms of funding. Suggestion was made to have Kathleen put an article in the next newsletter. Might also be a good panel for next year's CTAM convention. Special training/skills workshop in advocacy was another convention possibility.

Upcoming elections for President elect (College person) and Treasurer's position.
Update on Fine Arts Grad Standards: Jan and Mike attended a meeting on the standards focussing on creating clearer and more streamlined transitions between the various age groups and school levels. Refer to the Children Families Learning website for more information. Discussion followed. A special panel at the convention (detailing what standards are being covered at what schools and how these are being covered) would be helpful. Does CTAM want to publish a statement about standards?
New Affiliate Groups: No more information has been heard about affiliation issues with the Dance educators. Gregg provided background on how this evolved. Mike will contact the head of the Dance association again.
On the Road Report:
Kris reported that the sixth and final workshop was held yesterday in Moorhead. Some workshops were held during the week and some on the weekends. No trends appeared to suggest one was better than the other. More theater offerings would be appreciated. Format changed in the use of guest presenters- this worked well. Attendance ranged from 21 to 85/95 with an average of 43. Number of schools ranged from 3-4 schools participating up to 11 schools participating. Good suggestions came in (having student speakers and more hands on activities), the presentations and presenters were well received. Discussion followed about timing, participation, publicity, costs, mailing, evolution of these workshops. A formal report will be presented later.
Convention plans for CTAM 2002 in Stillwater- Theme “Sharing
Our Resources”
Gregg has been in contact with Jim Graupner. Organizational awards will be presented at the luncheon and the CTAM awards will take place at the dinner. Speaker plans are still in process- email Gregg with your suggestions. The riverboat is reserved for the evening banquet. The luncheon is tentatively scheduled for the Courthouse. More specific information will follow. Registration forms will be revised to note what type of school the participant teaches at and where they are located in the State (county). It would be helpful for all Board members to have a copy of the CTAM region/section map.
All Board members should propose or seek proposals for at least one conference session. Reminder for all Board members to remain active here. Possible panel sessions were discussed.
At the last Executive meeting it was decided that people could propose professional presenters for the convention who would receive a small stipend which would be funded by a small increase in registration fees. The Executive Board will approve these stipends.
Testing of speech instructors:
Under the new Communication Arts Literature licensure every college teacher will be taking a competency test and the current competency test just includes English questions. The new test should also include speech communication information. Judy Litterest will be writing a letter from CTAM to be sent to the State Board of Teaching and to Department Chairs of English, Speech and Education at the College level. It was suggested that Cindy work with Judy on this letter.
CTAM presence and action at events:
Discussion followed about other opportunities for CTAM presence. CTAM has traditionally sponsored coffee/cake at the State Speech tournament for coaches but it was decided to discontinue this practice. Gregg proposed that CTAM contact the High School League and put a congratulatory ad (every year) in the program- Mike will contact them.
Executive and Board of Governor position descriptions and
duties:
Mike distributed new job descriptions. Several changes to the documents were
suggested and Mike will continue to take suggestions and update these
descriptions.
Expectations of all Board members were clarified and discussed. Attendance at meetings is a standard expectation from all board members. All Board members are expected to provide at least one convention proposal.

Tom was just elected to NCA legislative executive
board. Congratulations! Watch for Tom's
new book that will be out in March.
No action was taken on today’s recurring theme of the open bar.
The next meeting for the BOG is September 19, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. in Stillwater.
