CTAM Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

September18, 2003, Radisson Duluth

Present:  Gregg Sawyer (President), Tom Kuster (President Elect), Mike Wartman (Past President), Mark Braun (Journal Editor), Dan Cronn-Mills (Newsletter Editor), Karen P. Wilson (Secretary)

The meeting was called to order at 5:45 p.m.

Minutes from the June 23, 2003 Executive Board Meeting were approved.

Reports:

Treasurer: (CTAM sends kind regards to Larry and Barbara Schnoor on the death in their family) Larry reported, in absentia, that there are 203 people pre-registered for the convention (190 for the luncheon, 215 for the banquet, 125 for the breakfast, 40 box lunches).  He would appreciate having at least six volunteers to work registration in the morning. A more detailed report will be provided at the Business Meeting on Saturday.

Newsletter:  Dan summarized that three newsletters go out- Fall (November, Oct 15 deadline), Winter (February, Jan 15 deadline), Summer (August, July 15 deadline).

Journal:  Mark reported that the journal is out and the costs are down ($1568.41,  228 journals sent).  Jennifer Hollingsworth (“WannaBeats? Fried Shoes!: A New Generation Finds the Beats”) won Best Manuscript from Central States.  The 2003 CTAM journal will be entered again for Best Journal Award. The lead article from the 2003 CTAM Journal will be submitted for Best Article this year.

Mark’s two year appointment is over as Journal Editor so this position is open for reappointment or election- keep this as a January agenda item.  Mark has extra copies of the journal.  Last weekend of March is the normal deadline for articles as the Journal goes to press around August 1. Thanks for all your fine work on the Journal Mark!

Past President:  Mike reported that the CTAM On the Road proposal with Schwan’s is being discussed again and an upcoming meeting will occur.  BOG should discuss what On the Road should look like.  Discussion followed about the history of this program.

Larry and Mike will be meeting to discuss procedures for individuals to apply to receive grants from the CTAM Foundation.

President:  Gregg gave an election update- Jill Lofald for President Elect, Karen P. Wilson for Secretary- nominations are welcome from the floor.  2004 conference possibility at St. Catherine’s- more information will be available by October 1.  Twin Cities is the central location for next year’s conference.

Convention Update/President Elect:  Tom distributed the 2003 program.  Session proposal form is a great idea and this form will now include ‘is this a wish or an offer?’  Tomorrow morning the two rooms in the Library must have someone to stand at the door and ensure that only CTAM conference participants are allowed in.  Everything else looks great.  Tom distributed a copy of a conference ‘room finder’.  Only a few sessions need technology and the hotel has taken care of these arrangements for a small fee.

Discussion followed about those who attend this conference for certification only.  Given the cost of rooms should these people be charged more? Consensus was to get more detailed information- how many people actually attend the conference only for certification?  Gregg will follow up with Barb Seng and Larry.  How many speech coaches attend only that meeting and are not registered for the conference?  Perhaps this is a bigger issue when the conference is in the Twin Cities.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:25 p.m.

Board of Governors meeting agenda was distributed.

Next meeting:  2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 20   (meet in registration area)

Respectfully Submitted,

Karen P. Wilson, Secretary
