Women's Hockey Wins, Ties at Bemidji State

Mavericks blow three-goal first period lead, hold on for tie Saturday against Beavers

For the first five minutes of Saturday's Minnesota State women's hockey match up at Bemidji State, it looked as though the Mavericks (14-13-2 overall, 10-12-2 WCHA) were going to cruise to an easy series sweep over the Beavers.

MSU won game one Friday evening at John Glas Fieldhouse 4-1, and after Shera Vis put the Mavericks ahead 3-0 Saturday just 4:56 into the game, everything was going the Mavericks' way.

But the Beavers took control from there.

BSU tallied a goal in each the first and second periods to narrow the MSU lead to 3-2 heading to the final 20 minutes.

When Nikki Eckebrecht tied the score just over a minute into the third, the lead the Mavericks had earned so quickly was gone.

The weekend was going well for the Mavericks.

Freshmen Kala Buganski and Christina Lee starred Friday, as Buganski scored a pair of goals while Lee scored a goal of her own and assisted on another.

Andrianne Thibault put MSU up 1-0 just 1:24 into Saturday's game. Lee followed with her second goal of the weekend at 3:09. Vis' goal ended the day for Beaver netminder Jessica Ptachick.

But when Bemidji State brought in Emily Brookhaw off the bench, something changed for the Mavericks. The junior stopped every one of the 25 shots she saw the rest of the way to earn a much needed point for BSU.

"It was almost like a false lead," said Mavericks head coach Jeff Vizenor. "We scored the goals so quickly and so easily."

Britni Kehler faced a barage of shots on the other end - 42 to be exact - and stood tall, saving 39 of them.

The Mavericks return to action at home this weekend with a match-up against conference rival St. Cloud State. Face-off from All Seasons Arena is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. Friday and 3:07 p.m. Saturday.

SCSU trails MSU by seven points for fifth-place in the WCHA standings.
