MSU ties Alaska Friday

Teams were tied going after one period Saturday

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA — Jake Brenk and Travis Morin each scored a goal in Minnesota State's 2-2 overtime tie with Alaska-Anchorage Friday at Sullivan Arena.

The result kept the two Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams in a tie for seventh place in the league standings with 12 points apiece.

Brenk scored his fourth goal of the season to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at 11:59 of the first period. Steve Wagner and Jeff Marler assisted.

The Seawolves responded less than three minutes later when Merit Waldrop got the puck past goalie Jon Volp.

The Mavericks led 2-1 after two periods when Travis Morin scored his ninth goal of the season. Kyle Peto recorded his team-leading 19th assist on the power-play goal, and David Backes also assisted.

The Mavericks outshot the Seawolves 21-10 over the first two periods, but the third belonged to the home team, which held a 12-6 shot advantage. Charlie Kronschnabel forced the tie with his goal at 4:33 of the final frame.

Volp finished with 21 saves to put his record at 6-9-1. Alaska's Nathan Lawson stopped 25 shots.

The Seawolves had the lone shot on goal in overtime.

On Saturday, MSU and Alaska matched their opening-night score after just one period, as the teams were tied 2-2 at press time.

Morin and Ryan Carter scored power-play goals, and Chris Clark got the start in goal for the Mavericks.

Minnesota State (8-13-4, 5-12-2 in WCHA) will take next weekend off and will return to play Feb. 4-5 when they host Colorado College at Mankato's Midwest Wireless Civic Center.
