UW goalie kills MSU's power

Badgers' Bruckler makes 31 saves, Mavericks 0 for 7 on power play

MANKATO — Minnesota State was beaten by the Killer P's Saturday night.

Power plays, pipes and posts did the Mavericks in, as they fell 3-2 to Wisconsin before 3,615 at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center.

The loss gave MSU a split in the entertaining and evenly played Western Collegiate Hock-ey Association series against the nation's second-ranked team.

But a few inches here or there might have meant a sweep.

Ryan Carter hit the post on a first-period breakaway. Kyle Peto hit the crossbar on a power play in the third period. And Brock Becker is still wondering how he hit iron on a power-play shot in the second.

The Mavericks were 0 for 7 on the power play, thanks to the Badgers' best penalty killer, senior goaltender Bernd Bruck-ler.

Bruckler made 31 saves, including 10 while MSU had the man advantage.

"No question we had a lot of great opportunities," Mavericks coach Troy Jutting said. "I don't know if you can get many more quality chances than we got. ... (Bruckler) showed why he might be the best goalie in the country tonight."

Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves had equal praise for his backstop.

"The goaltender has to be your best penalty killer because the bottom line ends with him," Eaves said.

The Mavericks (7-7-2, 4-7-1 in WCHA) had five power-play chances in the second period and one in the final two minutes of the game. MSU goalie Jon Volp came off the ice for an extra attacker with one minute remaining. But, despite the 6-on-4 advantage, the Mavericks could not force the series' second overtime session.

"We had a lot of chances but couldn't score," said Mavericks captain Brad Thompson, who scored the game's first goal. "We couldn't put it home. It's very frustrating when the puck doesn't go in and you have that good of chances."

Meanwhile, the Badgers (13-5-0, 10-4-0), who regained first place in the WCHA standings with the victory, scored on two of their four power plays.

"When you go 7 for 7 on the penalty kill and 2 for 4 on the power play," Eaves said, "that's why they call them specialty teams."

Five on five, the Mavericks held a 2-1 advantage.

Thompson deflected Steve Wagner's shot from the point to put the Mavericks up 1-0 at 11:48 of the first period. And Jon Dubel scored on a rebound after Bruckler stopped shots by David Backes and Travis Morin to make it 3-2 at 8:02 of the third.

Wisconsin tied the game at 1-all on and Andrew Joudrey backhander at 17:06 of the first period.

The Mavericks had a chance to reclaim the lead with 1 1/2 minutes remaining in the period, but Carter hit the post on a clean breakaway.

Although the Mavericks had a one-man advantage for half of the second period and outshot the Badgers 15-7, they fell behind by two goals.

Robbie Earl put the Badgers ahead 2-1 just 38 seconds into the second period. The WCHA scoring leader rifled a shot from the right point, putting the puck just under the crossbar above Volp's glove during a power play.

The Badgers made it a two-goal game at 12:37 when Joe Pavelski, the conference's top-scoring rookie scored another power-play goal. Defenseman Jeff Likens' shot hit the post and fell into the crease behind Volp, who was sprawled out on his stomach. Pavelski was the first to notice the loose puck and stuffed it over the line.

Volp finished with 27 saves.

The Mavericks will play the first of seven consecutive games away from the Civic Center Friday when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the first game of a series against Colorado College. They will return to Mankato Jan. 15 against Minnesota.
