Colorado College uses pair of odd goals to help beat MSU 4-3

Puck bounces Tigers' way

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — Colorado College boasts the No. 1 offense in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Ranked second in the nation, the Tigers have a collection of speed and skill possibly unmatched by any other team in the league.

They showed off their talents with a pair of power-play goals Saturday at the World Arena. But they also scored a couple of quirky goals in a run of four consecutive scores that secured a 4-3 victory over Minnesota State.

"(The Mavericks) deserved a little better fate this weekend," Tigers coach Scott Owens said. "They're a good team, but they have one little thing go wrong in each game, and that costs them."

The Mavericks led 2-0 before five minutes had expired. But they were unable to build upon the lead or hang on because of a couple of those little things.

The Tigers scored their first goal when Brian Salcido shot the puck backwards on his belly, hitting a Maverick's skate. They got the eventual game-winner when MSU goalie Jon Volp was behind his net allowing James Brannigan an easy goal.

"(The Tigers) are good at crashing the net," said MSU senior Adam Gerlach, who had a goal and an assist. "When you crash the net, you're going to score those kind of goals."

Minnesota State came out a different team than Friday when they gave up six goals in the opening period in an 8-5 loss.

Jake Brenk scored just 16 seconds after the opening faceoff, shooting in the rebound of a shot by Gerlach. Freshman Joel Hanson put the Mavericks up by two when he scored off a faceoff in the CC zone at 4:53.

"You can't look at it this way, but the last five periods (of the series) we won 8-6," MSU coach Troy Jutting said. "But they got the four points (for the WCHA standings)."

Unlike the Mavericks on Friday night, the Tigers were able to stop the bleeding.

Salcido finished off a mad scramble in front of the Mavericks net with his a backwards heave at 15:52 of the first period. The puck hit MSU defenseman Kyle Peto's skate in the crease and caromed in behind Volp.

That was Salcido's second career goal. His first came against the Mavericks last season.

"That put some life back in us," Owens said.

Salcido made a another nifty play to help the Tigers tie the game at 7:17 of the second period.

During a CC power play, Salcido had the puck in the high slot and waited for Volp to commit to his shot before he passed low to Brett Sterling, who was alone at the right post for an easy tap-in goal behind the goalie.

"They move the puck so well," said Gerlach, one of the Mavericks' penalty killers. "They've got a great power play.

The Tigers took advantage of a Ryan Carter boarding penalty to take their first lead of the game. Sterling found Aaron Slattengren open at the left post, and Slattengren smacked it in at 14:32.

The Tigers finished 2 for 7 on the power play. The Mavericks were 0 for 3.

The Mavericks had a chance to tie the game four minutes into the third period, but Brock Becker shot wide with half the net open in front of him. Less than two minutes later, Brannigan made sure he hit the open net, getting a perfect pass from John Brunkhorst as Volp skated behind the net to play the puck.

Jutting said he thought the puck took a "funny hop" on the play.

Gerlach scored the Mavericks' final goal at 14:45. Jake Brenk assisted for a two-point game and a three-point weekend.

Volp finished with 31 saves. The Tigers' Matt Zaba had 28.

Becker received a game disqualification penalty for kicking in the final minute of the game. The penalty also comes with a one-game suspension.

The Mavericks (7-9-2, 4-9-1 in WCHA) play again Dec. 29-30 in the Ohio Hockey Classic at Columbus, Ohio.
