Women's Hockey Stays Even With St. Cloud State After Weekend Split

Kehler stops 43 shots, Stohr scores short handed game winner Friday

These days, not much separates the Minnesota State women's hockey team from its counterparts at St. Cloud State.

They entered their weekend set at the National Hockey Center tied in the WCHA standings with identical 3-8-1 records.

A pair of 3-2 victories - one for each team - did little to separate the two teams either, as both went 2-for-7 on the power play in the game they won, and both received outstanding goaltending all weekend long.

MSU won the series opener on the heels of a short-handed game winner from Amanda Stohr and 43 saves from Britni Kehler. The junior who stopped at least 14 shots in each period stood tall from the beginning, keeping the Mavericks in the game after two periods of play. The Huskies had out shot the Mavs 31-13 after 40 minutes, but the score was tied at two.

"I didn't realize they had that many shots," Kehler said. "Credit my defense. I saw all the pucks and didn't really have to make many tough saves."

"She was in the zone," said Mavericks head coach Jeff Vizenor. "She was seeing the puck well and directing it to the corners. She gave us a chance to win both nights."

Stohr's game winner at 6:47 of the final period assured the Mavs of the victory as Kehler stopped all 14 shots she saw during the final 20 minutes. SCSU held the advantage in shots on goal 45-22 for the game.

"I don't know what it is, I like the arena and I like playing there," Kehler said. The victory was her third straight win at the National Hockey Center. "I like St. Cloud and we seem to play well there."

MSU played a more evenly matched game in the shot chart the following day, matching the Huskies in shots with 32. But it was a seven-minute stretch in the second period where SCSU gained control.

After Stohr scored her second goal of the weekend at 6:27 of the first to give the Mavs a 1-0 lead at the intermission, the Huskies scored all three of their goals - two on the power play - to gain a 3-1 lead.

"They were able to find a way to bury the puck," Vizenor said. "It was their special teams on Saturday that allowed them to win the game."

Freshman Christina Lee tallied her sixth goal of the season with 17 seconds remaining in the second period but that is as close as the Mavericks would come. Kendall Newell made 30 saves to earn the win for SCSU. Kehler stopped 29 in defeat.

After four weeks on the road, MSU comes back to All Seasons Arena this weekend for a conference series against Bemidji State. Face-off Friday is set for 7:07 p.m. Saturday's game will get underway at 7:37 p.m.
