Women's Hockey Shuts Out St. Cloud

Kehler stops 56 shots in Maverick victories

Before this season began, Minnesota State women’s hockey coach Jeff Vizenor said Brit Kehler took offense to not making the Canadian Under-22 team. The sophomore goalie took out some of that frustration on the St. Cloud State Huskies last weekend, not only winning a pair of games at SCSU, but shutting out the Huskies twice en route to a conference sweep in St. Cloud.

“I feel like I have something to prove. I need to prove I can play,” Kehler said about her snubbing by the National Team. “I played on the team last year and got cut this year, but it can’t be a focus of mine. I am just trying to make good things happen here in Mankato.”

Thanks to Kehler and stout defense, the Mavericks won 3-0 in Friday’s opener, despite being outshot 30-21 by the Huskies. Felicia Nelson continued her scoring tear for MSU, tallying her seventh goal of the season in just her 11th game. Her goal at 11:38 of the first was the game-winner and the only scoring for either team in the first two periods.

The Mavericks added a pair of insurance goals in the third when captain Jen Jonsson scored her first goal of the season at 10:06. The power-play tally extended the Mavericks streak of consecutive games with a power play goal to eight.

“Getting the power play going is all about finding the right personnel, having them gel right and read each other,” said Mavericks head coach Jeff Vizenor. “We have been able to gel and find some openings.”

Junior forward Alycia Wilson scored the final goal of the game 18:52, her second goal of the season, putting the finishing touches on the victory.

“I think we played well. We have been able to adapt well to the bigger ice because of our speed,” Vizenor said. “I think it was the best team defense we played all year. We chipped in together, helped out down-low and up-high and Brit made the saves when we needed her.”

Minnesota State won the series finale on Saturday 2-0 as Kehler extended her shutout streak to an impressive 143:49. MSU scored a pair of power play goals on the day, going 2-for-2 with the man power advantage.

The first period remained scoreless until sophomore forward Kristina Bunker blasted a shot past SCSU’s Kendall Newell at 18:33. Jonsson added an assist on the play as did junior defenseman Autumn Conway.

Holding a 1-0 lead with just over seven minutes to go in the second, sophomore Noelle Needham continued her solid play with a power play goal at 12:49. Bunker and Conway added their second points of the game with assists.

With her shutouts this weekend, Kehler broke the career shutouts mark of five held by Shari Vogt. They were her third and fourth shutouts of the season, also a team record.

“I’m just having fun out there,” Kehler said. “The defense has let me see the puck all season and they make my job much easier.”

Back at No. 10 in the USCHO national rankings, MSU has this weekend off before embarking on the most difficult stretch of games this season. The Mavericks hit the road for a pair of conference games at No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth on Dec. 2 and 3. MSU will conclude the 2005 portion of their schedule the following weekend at home against No. 5 Minnesota.
