Football Hosts No. 2 North Dakota

by Dan Myers
October 20, 2005

The Last Time They Met: October 23, 2004. The Mavericks were held out of the end zone but ended UND’s 12 quarter shut out streak when UND defeated MSU 20-3 last season at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.

Key Stats: UND’s 33 points in their win last week over Minnesota-Duluth was their lowest point total of the season… UND is 9-4-1 all-time at Blakeslee Stadium… North Dakota has allowed just 42.4 rushing yards per game this season, tops in all of Division II.

When UND Has The Ball: The Fighting Sioux are coming off their season-low in points scored last weekend, winning in Duluth 33-10. UND is ranked fourth in the conference in total offense this season, netting just over 400 yards per game. Junior quarterback Chris Belmore is the fifth-highest rated passer in Division II at 173.5. This season, Belmore has thrown for 1,477 yards and 16 touchdowns with only two interceptions. On the ground, the Sioux are led by Chris Beatty and his 722 yards, third in the NCC. He also has eight scores. Senior receiver Dan Grossman has been Belmore’s favorite target, with 44 catches, 713 yards and six scores.

When UND Has The Ball: The play of the offensive line is paramount if Minnesota State is to have any chance of an upset this Saturday. North Dakota has the top defense in the NCC, giving up just 230 yards per game. If MSU’s offensive line can open a couple holes for senior I-Back Sean Treasure, coming off his first 100-yard game of the season last week, the Mavericks can keep it close. Senior quarterback Jamie VanDenElzen has taken good care of the ball all season (only three interceptions) and that must continue. Wide receiver Tyrell Smith posted yet another 100-yard game last weekend and scored two more touchdowns.

Ben Harness and Sean Treasure

Northwest Missouri State linebacker Ben Harness (white jersey) tries to bring down Minnesota State running back Sean Treasure during the first quarter of Thursday's season-opening football game at Blakeslee Stadium. Treasure ran for 75 yards and caught four passes for 27 more.
