What is Job Shadowing?

It's spending part or all of a day with a professional in the career you're interested in pursuing to gather more information to make solid career decisions. If you're undecided about your major you can benefit by learning if the career is a good fit for you or not. Juniors and seniors in the midst of their major can benefit by seeing what direction they want to take in their career field. Job shadowing can also open up doors to internships and even job offers.

Here at Student Support Services we feel it is a valuable use of time to spend 1-8 hours shadowing a career to cement those tough career decisions you're facing. We will assist you by locating a professional in the career you're interested in and obtain their permission for you to call to set up a time and day to visit them. Tell your SSS Advisor you're interested, it's as simple as that!

What is Mentoring?

The Office of Alumni Relations and the College of Business are working to bring the benefit of mentoring to today's MSU students. E-mentoring is a fun and easy way for MSU students to gain an inside look into their area of career interest, build professional contacts and develop a supportive mentoring relationship with an MSU alumna/us. E-mentoring is designed to make mentoring convenient for mentors and students alike, allowing participants to easily communicate on a regular basis via email. The Office of Alumni Relations will facilitate this 12-to-18 week program in which students will be matched with an MSU alumna/alumnus employed at companies such as Midwest Wireless, Federated Insurance and the Mayo Clinic. Applicants should have a 3.0 GPA. If you don't get accepted into this program, Student Support Services will do their best to set up a similar experience just for you. Discuss this opportunity with your SSS advisor. There is one catch, the deadline is at the end of September*!

*Deadline date may vary. Please check the Office of Alumni Relations website for official deadline date.
