How Do I Convert?

StarID Conversion Training and Support

Welcome to the ITS conversion training and support page. This page has two main areas. First, you'll find our "Six Steps to a Successful StarID Conversion", which contains a step-by-step guide to helping you convert to StarID. Below that, you'll find a matrix of common hardware and operating system configurations with information on how to set up some of the standard MSU systems to use with your StarID. Six Steps to a Successful StarID Conversion

How do you convert to StarID? It's easy (well...relatively easy) if you follow these six steps. But if you run into snags, don't worry. ITS is here to help you out.

STEP 1: ACTIVATE and SYNC!

  • What's it mean? You need to change your campus password (MavMail and D2L) to a NEVER used password and then you will have to activate your StarID at starid.minnstate.edu. Once you've activated it, you need to synchronize your StarID password with your campus password (e.g., make it the same as the password for both accounts.)
  • How do I do it?
     

STEP 2: SCHEDULE! (Faculty only)

  • What's it mean? Faculty can schedule their conversion for a time that is convenient for them during the month of November. Note that you may experience some complications as you uncover new and as yet unreported issues, which may take some time to resolve.
  • How do I do it? Details will be coming by the end of October.
  • Sign up here - Look for the course named "Faculty Early StarID Conversion"

STEP 3: CONVERT!

  • What's it mean? On your scheduled date for conversion, ITS will automatically convert you. Please note that if you have not completed Step 1 above, you'll likely experience significant challenges and complications.
  • How do I do it? This will happen automatically. There is nothing actionable on your part.

STEP 4: CONFIGURE!

  • What's it mean? This is the hardest part of the process. For any systems that are entirely web/cloud-based (such as D2L), you shouldn't have any configuration issues. However, any applications on your devices (desktops, laptops, tablets, mobiles, etc.) that store a username or password will need to be reconfigured. This will likely include some of the staple services on campus such as MavNet, your email client (if you use one), MavPrint, and others.
  • How do I do it? Refer to the matrix below for some of the standard configurations and ways to get yourself configured with some of the staple ITS services. Note that not *all* systems or configurations are represented here. If your system is not represented, please contact the Service Desk, 507-389-6544, servicedesk@mnsu.edu.

STEP 5: USE IT!

  • What's it mean? Once you're converted, there's no going back. Embrace it and use it! Your new StarID is your single way to sign onto all MSU services and most Minnesota State Services.
    • How do I do it? Use the username (now StarID) and password you created in STEP 1 above to access all of your campus systems.

STEP 6: GET HELP!

  • What's it mean? Confused? Unable to get something working? That's understandable. A process this massive is going to have some bumps in the road. Don't panic! We're here to help.
  • How do I do it? ITS will have a robust suite of support services deployed on campus during the conversion and well into Spring 2014 semester to help you out. We want to be your campus partners in resolving issues with the conversion quickly and efficiently.

    • Look for anyone on campus with a "StariD? Ask me!" t-shirt for assistance;
    • Look for one of our "guerilla support" stations around campus for help getting yourself up and running.
