Services we offer:

  • Tutoring
  • Study skills workshops
  • Classroom presentations
  • Standardized test prep (GRE, PPST etc.)
  • Math/English Placement Testing

Tutoring is one of the primary services of The Center for Academic Success (CAS). Any MSU student is eligible for FREE individual or group tutoring in most subjects, including Writing and Language/ESL, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Accounting, Business, Economics and Statistics. For courses at the 100 & 200 levels that are not on our regular tutoring schedule, students can make a request for us to find a tutor.

Referring Students for Tutoring

  • All tutoring in the Math/Science Center is walk-in. We have schedules available in our office and online. Students are welcome to come in any time during the hours set aside for their course. General tutoring is unlimited.
  • All tutoring in the Writing Center is appointment based. Students must stop in to make an appointment. If there is a slot open when the student comes to make an appointment, they may get in right away. Appointments are limited to either 30 or 50 minutes, based on the needs of the student. We offer 30-minute walk-in appointments on the first floor of the library on select evenings.
  • All tutoring in the Online Writing Center is appointment based. Students must email us to request access to the Online Writing Center before scheduling an appointment. Appointments may be synchronous or asychronous, depending on the needs of the student and where they are in the writing process.
  • We provide individual (writing/languages) and small group tutoring (math/science) in many 100-200 level courses. We also have upper level tutoring available in Mathematics and Physics.
  • Our tutoring services involve a commitment on the part of the students. They should not solely rely on our services to get them an A!

Recommending Tutor Candidates

We greatly appreciate and rely on faculty to recommend students for tutoring positions. Below is a list of important considerations:

  • Candidates apply online through our Employment Opportunities section
  • Candidates must have earned an A in the course they wish to tutor, or a B if they have a high faculty recommendation to accompany it
  • Candidates must have earned at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and retain that GPA while employed
  • Candidates must attend at least the first three session of our CRLA training in order to begin tutoring
  • Candidates must receive a faculty recommendation for each discipline they tutor in
  • To recommend a student, please email academicsuccess@mnsu.edu.

Request a Classroom Presentation

Faculty members wishing to have a Tutoring Center representative visit their class to introduce students to the Center may schedule an appointment by filling out our request form. If you would like to receive Tutoring Center information brochures or bookmarks to distribute to your students, you may email your request to academicsuccess@mnsu.edu.

Take Home Exam Alert

Although the majority of students who seek support through the CAS do so for legitimate purposes, we do occasionally have students who request help with problems, questions, or take-home exams that have been assigned for a grade. Our tutors are instructed to refuse help to students who request assistance with these kinds of assignments or exams. However, because tutors cannot tell when a student’s questions belong to an exam or assignment, they may unintentionally help a student do work that he or she is supposed to be doing alone.

Despite our best efforts, we cannot prevent this abuse of the tutoring center without your help. If you give a take-home exam or assign other work for which you do not want students to receive tutorial support, please let us know.
