Recommendations for Faculty:

Encouraging your students to use the Writing Center services sends them the message that you value quality student writing. To increase your students’ awareness of the Writing Center, we offer the following suggestions:

  •  Include our statement on your syllabus. As part of the Center for Academic Success, the Writing Center is the primary on-campus source for free academic support in the areas of writing and modern languages. Students can work one-on-one with a trained consultant to receive objective, constructive feedback on their academic writing projects at any stage of the writing process.   • Link to our website on your D2L course page. Our updated website contains useful information about our mission, services, and resources for student writers. Students can view our frequently asked questions, schedule, and links to external resources to aid them in writing in a specific discipline.
  • Bring your class to the Writing Center. Schedule a class tour of the Writing Center and 5-10 minute informational "meet-and-greet" with one of our writing consultants to help your students be more comfortable with this resource. See our “Request a Workshop” link for scheduling information.
  • Bring the Writing Center to your class. At your request, one of our writing consultants can visit your class and briefly explain our services and strategies. See our “Request a Workshop” link for scheduling information.
  • Contact us about workshops and presentations. We run in-class workshops and presentations about general writing topics, writing in specific disciplines, using and citing sources in MLA or APA, or for specific assignments. See our “Request a Workshop” link for scheduling information.
  • Ask us for informational fliers and bookmarks. We can provide you with our fliers to post on your office door, pass out in class, or send to all of your students via e-mail.

Faculty members can also:

  • Remind students to schedule appointments early.  Too frequently, students drop in at the last minute to have their papers “proofread.” These rushed consultations—when we are able to accommodate them—are limited in their effectiveness since they do not allow students adequate time to process the feedback they have received and make meaningful revisions to their work.
  • Send us information on your assignments.  Copies of your syllabus, assignments, grading criteria, and samples of model papers are helpful resources for our consultants. The more we understand your writing assignments, the better we can help your students.
