Alyssa and Anthony ~ Public Speaking

Hi! We're Alyssa and Anthony, Graduate Assistants in the Communcation Studies Department. We assist with any kind of public speaking assignment for any course at MSU.  We also teach classes in public speaking and give classroom presentations on any aspect of speech preparation and delivery to instructors who request this service from the CAS.

We're available for scheduled appointments in the CAS and also hold a drop-in speech lab once a week.  We love helping people prepare for their speeches!

Em ~ Writing

Em

Hello! I am a second year graduate student in English: Technical Communication. I am also enrolled in the Nonprofit Leadership graduate program because I aim to work for a nonprofit advocacy group and/or public policy.

This is my second year at the Writing Center. I specialize in technical/business writing, so I see a lot of students hoping to polish their resumés, create cover letters or Statements of Purpose, etc. I majored in literature and minored in film studies for my undergraduate degree, though, so it is fun to help a student work on a literature/film analysis or humanities theories.

I tailor my tutoring style to the needs of each student. I am familiar with APA, MLA, and CMS styles, and enjoy working with students on a wide variety of writing genres. I look forward to helping you be comfortable with and enjoy your writing!

Leah ~Creative Writing

Leah

My name is Leah Alsaker, and I am a first year graduate student in the creative writing program.  I am currently specializing in poetry. However, I am adept at many other kinds of writing, so please feel free to come to me about any type of academic, professional, or creative writing.

I am most familiar with MLA and APA styles, but am comfortable using online resources as well as resources in our center to help students with other styles.

I completed my undergraduate degree at South Dakota State University and earned a degree in English education with minors in history and professional writing. When not working or studying, I love playing piano, painting, singing, juggling, and reading. I look forward to working with you!

Padam ~ Writing/ESL

Padam

Hi. I am Padam Chauhan, originally from Nepal. I am a Graduate Assistant here at the Center for Academic Success, Minnesota State University, Mankato. I am in the MA TESL Program here at MSU majoring in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). I love visiting different countries, meeting people, knowing about their culture, language, etc., listening to the all types of music, reading and dancing.

I equally love academic writing so much, and I am most familiar with the MLA and APA citation styles. I look forward to welcoming you at the CAS and working with you !!!

Sooyeon ~ Writing/ESL

Sooyeon

Hi. I am Sooyeon and a graduate student of the TESOL program. I am from a beautiful country, South Korea and a big fan of Harry Potter! I started to work as a tutor from my undergraduate year, so it has been two and half years including the first semester of MNSU for helping students. Since my program focuses on the methodology of teaching ESL students and I have worked for an international school back in Korea, I have a confidence with having ESL students and helping their writing. I know what they are struggling with because English is not my first language, so I had the same experience or troubles that most of ESL students went through. However, that does not mean I would not welcome domestic students of course! I have enjoyed working with them as well, so feel free to ask for help to tune your writing! I will do the best. Thank you for coming and I hope to see you soon at a writing center or online session!

Kourtney ~ Writing and Norwegian

Hello, my name is Kourtney and I am a sophomore here at MNSU, Mankato. I am double majoring in English and Scandinavian Studies. I have a lot of experience with writing, so I know it can be difficult at times! My goal is to make writing a less daunting task for other students; whether that means grammar, brainstorming ideas, making revisions, citations, etc., I will try to help in any way I can. Aside from writing, I have taken almost two years of Norwegian, so I am willing to help students out with that as well. I am most comfortable with MLA and APA formats, but I will do my best to use our available resources to work through whatever format is required for your paper.

In my free time, I can often be found with a book as I love reading. I also enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures, watching movies, spending time with friends and family, watching football, and cheering for the Vikings. One fun fact about me is that I have an identical twin sister named Kaylee!

Alyssa ~ Writing/ASL

Hey, everyone! My name is Alyssa Monahan and I am an undergrad here at MNSU. I love to help with papers and sign language! I am always learning about new types of papers and citations, and we have many resources to help! My coworkers are amazing and they are always willing to assist if needed. I have had my share of difficult papers, so chances are, I will understand your questions. I love talking and helping people understand the cryptic ways of the English language. Come stop by and don't be afraid to ask any questions! Some fun facts about me are: I love the TV show Modern Family, I have a pet bearded dragon named Merle, and my parents own a bowling alley!! Hope to see you soon!

Kellie ~ Writing/Spanish

Kellie

Hi, my name is Kellie and I am a third-year student here at MSU Mankato. I am double majoring in Communication Disorders and Spanish. My goal is to become a speech therapist in a private practice who specializes in working with patients who speak Spanish. I also might want to travel outside of the U.S. one day in order to provide services in another country.

This is my second year working at the Writing Center. Writing has always been a passion of mine (although I am likely to complain if assigned a ten page paper about a topic in which I have little interest). I have experience in writing research papers, literary analyses, annotated bibliographies, and resumes. I am most familiar with MLA and APA formats. APA is required by my major. I am also willing to help anyone in need of Spanish tutoring at any level (including writing papers), as I have completed all of the coursework necessary for a bachelor’s in Spanish.

Outside of tutoring I enjoy reading, cooking, watching Netflix, playing volleyball, and listening to podcasts. I also have a slight obsession with pigs. I would absolutely love to have a teacup pig as a pet one day.

I look forward to working with a variety of people during my time as a tutor here. I’m excited to learn alongside the people I will be tutoring this year!

Marie ~ Writing

My name is Ashley Marie, but I like to be referred to as Marie.  I enjoy working in the writing center because I truly love helping students and showing them all the cool things they can do with writing.  I am a graduate student in the Anthropology Department and am still working on many projects in creative writing.  If anyone has questions related to writing in anthropology, I am the lady to see.  I also specialize in fiction writing, MLA citation, and AAA citation.  I do a lot of lab reports and scientific writing, so I can help with biology and chemistry as well. On my days off, I enjoy playing some tunes on my ukulele, Mahalo, and dancing ballet.

Nong ~ Writing

I am an undergraduate student majoring in accounting and minoring in math and business law. This is my first year as a writing tutor, but I have found it to be very satisfying. The idea that I can help a fellow student brings me joy.

Working with students who aren't comfortable with writing is something I can relate to because I grew up as an ESL student.  I know the struggles of a student when English is not their first language or they just don't know where to start.  This can be very intimidating or overwhelming. But I enjoy guiding students along with their papers while I sometimes learn things myself.

In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar and watching TV shows, such as The Walking Dead and Prison Break. One thing on my bucket list I want to cross off is skydiving.

Nicole ~ Writing

Nicole

I am a senior majoring in Art Education with a minor in Nonprofit Leadership.  I am also involved in the Honors program.  My major and minor combined with my Honors coursework have helped me explore my educational interests of art, social change, education, gender, and human rights.  My passions elsewhere lie in printmaking (woodcut and lithography particularly), running, reading, writing, and food.  Over the summer I work at a summer camps as a bunk counselor and a ceramics instructor.  Camp is one of my favorite places to be.  A fun fact about me: I had braces for seven years. Haha.

I have experience with writing in the areas of my educational interests that I listed above specifically in the following areas: professional educational materials, contemporary art, resumes, online portfolios, annotated bibliographies, research papers, and grant proposals.  Most of my writing experience is in APA style.  My tutoring style is student oriented.  I prefer to mold to what the student needs.  I like to ask a lot of prompting questions.  I like to learn from others and I think this often happens during tutoring sessions.

Noel ~ Writing/Software

Noel

I am a graduate student in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology field. This is my second year as a writing tutor and I am enjoying meeting new students as well as reading multidisciplinary papers.

Working with students that are not native speakers of English is my favorite thing to do. I enjoy brainstorming content ideas with students for their papers when they feel that they don't know where to start. It is great to see relief on a student's face when they realize they were more prepared than they thought they were.

I speak some French and am hoping to take on Spanish some day. In my free time I dabble in automotive repair as well as occasional cycling.

Jessica ~ Writing

Hello!  My name is Jessica Welch, and I am currently a second year student at MNSU!  I am originally from a small town in southeastern Wisconsin named Elkhorn. I am double-majoring in Dance and Creative Writing.  My area of expertise is prose, but I can help you with any type of writing!

I usually use the MLA citation style, but can help you with APA or any other style as well as point you in the direction of online resources for further help!

In dance, I specialize in ballet, which I have been studying for 15-16 years. I usually spend my time reading or writing when I am not doing homework and can often be found at reharsals or in a dance studio.

I look forward to meeting and working with you!

Kate ~ Writing

Hi there! I am a sophomore here at MSU Mankato. I am pursuing a career in Human Resource Management with a minor in International Business. This is my second semester working in the writing center. I am most familiar with MLA style but I am also fluent with APA. My experience with writing comes from my mother as well as the requirements for my education. Writing is more of a hobby for me, as it helps me get ideas drawn out and plan out future goals.

I'm always full of adventure, looking for new places to visit and gain cultural experiences. My hope is the connection with International Business will help me see the world.

Kenny ~ Writing

Hello, my name is Kenneth Hyde, but I like to go by Kenny. I am currently attending my second year here at MNSU. This is my first year working in the writing center as a tutor and a math tutor. My major is in accounting.

The writing style I am the most comfortable with and know the most about is MLA format. I still try my best with other styles of writing and use resources in the writing center to help when the writing style isn’t MLA.

Some of my hobbies include watching Netflix or YouTube, reading a good book, and playing video games.
