Chelsie ~ Speech/Communication Studies

Hi! I am in my second year of graduate school. I plan to graduate in either the spring or summer of 2016 with a Maters of Arts degree in Communication Studies. After getting my masters degree, I plan to get a doctoral degree in Communication Studies so that I can teach Communication Studies at a community college or a university.  I am from Rochester, MN and went to RCTC for two years and got my Associate of Arts degree in the spring of 2011. I then transferred to Mankato State in the summer of 2011 and got my Bachelors of Science degree in Communication Studies with an English minor in the fall of 2013. During my undergraduate years at Mankato State, I competed on the speech team for two years and received awards in informative and persuasive speaking. Some of my favorite hobbies include, reading, writing, cooking, traveling, teaching, and public speaking. In addition to being a graduate student, I am also a Teaching Assistant in the department of Communication Studies. Last spring semester, I taught a section of Professional Communication and Interviewing with a favorite professor of mine. This semester, I am teaching a section of Communication Fundamentals. I am extremely passionate not only about Communication Studies, but also about teaching college students. My number one goal as a teacher is to inspire and make a difference in students’ lives.

This my second semester working in the Center for Academic Success and I am a tutor in the speech lab which is located in the Writing Center. I love working in the speech lab as it has allowed me to meet and work with such wonderful people. Working in the speech lab gives me the best of both worlds, working with college students and tutoring in a subject that I enjoy and am passionate about.

Em ~ Writing/Conversation Skills

Hello! I am a second year graduate student in English: Technical Communication. I am also enrolled in the Nonprofit Leadership graduate program because I aim to work for a nonprofit advocacy group and/or public policy.

This is my second year at the Writing Center. I specialize in technical/business writing, so I see a lot of students hoping to polish their resumés, create cover letters or SOPs, etc. I majored in literature and minored in film studies for my undergraduate degree, though, so it is fun to help a student work on a literature/film analysis or humanities theories.

I tailor my tutoring style to the needs of each student. I am familiar with APA, MLA, and CMS styles, and enjoy working with students on a wide variety of writing genres. I look forward to helping you be comfortable with and enjoy your writing!

Emily J ~ Writing

Hello!  I am a graduate student studying creative nonfiction writing here at Minnesota State University, Mankato.  I received a Bachelor's Degree in English (creative writing and professional writing) last year, and I have been tutoring English for three years.

Working in the writing center has been my most rewarding job; I learn so much from the students I work with.  I specialize in paper organization and MLA formatting, and I have experience with various writing styles, such as technical writing, litarary criticism, and creative writing.

As a writing center tutor, I will strive to provide useful information and resources to address your writing concerns.  Thank you for considering the Writing Center!

Emily V ~ Writing

I am a second-year graduate student in MNSU’s Experiential Education program. I have a bachelor’s degree in English and am familiar with MLA and APA citation styles. After completing my undergraduate studies, I taught English as a foreign language overseas as a Peace Corps Volunteer and have since spent several years working with K-12 students at public schools and museums. Working at the Writing Center combines my passion for the written word with my love for working with students outside the classroom.

Gena ~ Writing/Reading Skills

Hi! I'm in my third and final year of the Creative Writing MFA program here at MNSU. I got my undergraduate degree in English with a writing emphasis and a minor in Art History. Though I don't have any official certifications, I have taken classes in the TESL area and enjoy working with English Language Learners. I especially enjoy working with these students in the writing center and love to see their confidence climb when they've finally mastered a concept. Since an English degree also includes many literature-based classes, I am also experienced in literature and analysis. My outside interests, though I don't have much free time these days, include drawing, reading, and watching Netflix with friends. As for my fun fact—I love pugs and anything pug related! I had two pugs growing up. They are now both very old and live with my parents. I miss them dearly, though my mom is good about updating me on their day-to-day shenanigans.

Kanke ~ Writing/American Sign Language

I am a senior working toward my B.A. in Film and Media Studies. This is my second year at the Writing Center. In the spring of my second year here, I wrote a long research paper. I was very proud of my work, and the day I turned it in, I also e-mailed it to the Mankato Free Press. After a few "did you read it?" and "did you like it," e-mails, the editor finally decided to write an article about my research. Mankato Women's Rugby was on the front page of the Sports section. I love the Writing Center because we help students reach their full potential. I believe every student should take pride in their work. You can do it! I also tutor American Sign Language. After graduation, I hope to further my studies in ASL and learn more about Deaf Culture. It is very important to learn both. Outside of the Center for Academic Success, I play on the Women's Rugby team here at MSU. I have also played for the MN All-star team and the Midwest Thunderbirds. This summer I rode 86.6 miles to the Twin Cities on my bicycle. It took me six hours and 54 minutes! I love staying active.
