Em ~ Writing/Conversation Skills

Hello! I am a second year graduate student in English: Technical Communication. I am also enrolled in the Nonprofit Leadership graduate program because I aim to work for a nonprofit advocacy group and/or public policy.

This is my second year at the Writing Center. I specialize in technical/business writing, so I see a lot of students hoping to polish their resumés, create cover letters or Statements of Purpose, etc. I majored in literature and minored in film studies for my undergraduate degree, though, so it is fun to help a student work on a literature/film analysis or humanities theories.

I tailor my tutoring style to the needs of each student. I am familiar with APA, MLA, and CMS styles, and enjoy working with students on a wide variety of writing genres. I look forward to helping you be comfortable with and enjoy your writing!

Emily J ~ Writing

Emily J

Hello!  I am a graduate student studying creative nonfiction writing here at Minnesota State University, Mankato.  I received a Bachelor's Degree in English (creative writing and professional writing) last year, and I have been tutoring English for three years.

Working in the writing center has been my most rewarding job; I learn so much from the students I work with.  I specialize in paper organization and MLA formatting, and I have experience with various writing styles, such as technical writing, literary criticism, and creative writing.

As a writing center tutor, I will strive to provide useful information and resources to address your writing concerns.  Thank you for considering the Writing Center!

I am a second-year graduate student in MNSU’s Experiential Education program. I have a bachelor’s degree in English and am familiar with MLA and APA citation styles. After completing my undergraduate studies, I taught English as a foreign language overseas as a Peace Corps Volunteer and have since spent several years working with K-12 students at public schools and museums. Working at the Writing Center combines my passion for the written word with my love for working with students outside the classroom.

Gena ~ Writing/Reading Skills

Hi! I'm in my third and final year of the Creative Writing MFA program here at MNSU. I got my undergraduate degree in English with a writing emphasis and a minor in Art History. Though I don't have any official certifications, I have taken classes in the TESL area and enjoy working with English Language Learners. I especially enjoy working with these students in the writing center and love to see their confidence climb when they've finally mastered a concept. Since an English degree also includes many literature-based classes, I am also experienced in literature and analysis. My outside interests, though I don't have much free time these days, include drawing, reading, and watching Netflix with friends. As for my fun fact—I love pugs and anything pug related! I had two pugs growing up. They are now both very old and live with my parents. I miss them dearly, though my mom is good about updating me on their day-to-day shenanigans.

Kellie ~ Writing

Hi, my name is Kellie and I am a third-year student here at MSU Mankato. I am double majoring in Communication Disorders and Spanish. My goal is to become a speech therapist in a private practice who specializes in working with patients who speak Spanish. I also might want to travel outside of the U.S. one day in order to provide services in another country.

This is my first year working at the Writing Center. Writing has always been a passion of mine (although I am likely to complain if assigned a ten page paper about a topic in which I have little interest). I have experience in writing research papers, literary analyses, annotated bibliographies, and resumes. I am most familiar with MLA format, although this year I will be learning APA format very well, as my major requires everything to be written in this style. I am also willing to help anyone in need of Spanish tutoring at any level (including writing papers), as I have completed all of the coursework necessary for a bachelor’s in Spanish.

Outside of tutoring I enjoy reading, cooking, watching Netflix, playing volleyball, and listening to podcasts. I also have a slight obsession with pigs. I would absolutely love to have a teacup pig as a pet one day.

I look forward to working with a variety of people during my time as a tutor here. I’m excited to learn alongside the people I will be tutoring this year!

Marie ~ Writing

My name is AshleyMarie but I like to be referred to as Marie. I enjoy working in the writing center because I truly love helping students, and showing them all the cool things you can do with writing. I am majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Creative Writing. I will graduating this upcoming spring and continuing in forensics. If any of you have any question/writing relating to anthropology, I’m the girl you should come to. I also specialize in fiction writing, MLA citation style, and AAA citation style. I also do a lot of lab report and scientific writing, so any biology or chemistry student may come to me as well. On my days off I enjoy playing some tunes on my ukulele, Mahalo, and dancing ballet.

Marilyn ~ Writing/Chinese (Mandarin)

Hello! My name is Marilyn and I am a senior. My major is Art History and my minor is Ethnic Studies. I am also taking classes for a certificate in Museum Studies. This is my first year working in the writing center.

I have experience writing research papers for art history and ethnic studies classes and am most familiar with Chicago and APA style citations. I would also be happy to help with resumes, annotated bibliographies, and reflection papers. Prior to working in the writing center, I worked as a tutor for K-12 students which taught me the importance of being considerate of each student’s needs and asking a lot of questions. I look forward to building on these experiences as a writing and language tutor.

In addition to helping with writing, I would love to help students with elementary Mandarin Chinese. I have taken Mandarin classes here at MSU, as well as at the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota. I have intermediate proficiency and would be happy to help with writing, reading, grammar, pronunciation, and can offer tips for self-studying.

Nicole ~ Writing

I am a senior majoring in Art Education with a minor in Nonprofit Leadership.  I am also involved in the Honors program.  My major and minor combined with my Honors coursework have helped me explore my educational interests of art, social change, education, gender, and human rights.  My passions elsewhere lie in printmaking (woodcut and lithography particularly), running, reading, writing, and food.  Over the summer I work at a summer camps as a bunk counselor and a ceramics instructor.  Camp is one of my favorite places to be.  A fun fact about me: I had braces for seven years. Haha.

I have experience with writing in the areas of my educational interests that I listed above specifically in the following areas: professional educational materials, contemporary art, resumes, online portfolios, annotated bibliographies, research papers, and grant proposals.  Most of my writing experience is in APA style.  My tutoring style is student oriented.  I prefer to mold to what the student needs.  I like to ask a lot of prompting questions.  I like to learn from others and I think this often happens during tutoring sessions.

Noel ~ Writing/Software

I am a graduate student in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology field. This is my second year as a writing tutor and I am enjoying meeting new students as well as reading multidisciplinary papers.

Working with students that are not native speakers of English is my favorite thing to do. I enjoy brainstorming content ideas with students for their papers when they feel that they don't know where to start. It is great to see relief on a student's face when they realize they were more prepared than they thought they were.

I speak some French and am hoping to take on Spanish some day. In my free time I dabble in automotive repair as well as occasional cycling.

Saleena ~ Writing

Hello! My name is Saleena, and I am a second year Pre-Nursing student here at Minnesota State University- Mankato. Aside from my rigorous studies, I am involved in the Student Nursing Association, Student Events Team- Homecoming and Mav After Darks committee, and I recently joined Health PRO’s.

Although I do not have much experience in tutoring, I have a lot of experience in helping students. This summer I worked on campus as an Orientation Peer Assistant- by far the best job I have encountered. This opportunity allowed me to assist students with their transition from high school to college by proffering excitement, encouragement, confidence, and a comfortable environment. It is my goal to be able to offer the same features here in the Writing Center to all of you.

It sounds like my life only consists of school and work, I know, but I also take time for myself when I get the chance. I enjoy the company of others and I am very family oriented, I love to binge-watch on Netflix, I am a “shopaholic,” and I occasionally take time to read inspirational novels.

Shyam ~ Writing/ESL

Hello, I am Shyam. I am obtaining my Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (MA TESL) degree. Writing is one of my major hobbies. I believe that writing is one such skill/area that connects peoples’ thought and opinion irrespective of their gender, background, and nationality. So far as writing tutoring is concerned, my experiences include teaching five-paragraph essay, resume writing, report writing, and blog writing. I am familiar with the APA citation style. I hold Masters in English Language Teaching from Kathmandu University.

Besides tutoring, I like to be involved in teacher networking and participating in conferences and seminars. I also like traveling new places, cycling, playing volleyball, and table tennis. Since Minnesota is rich in lakes, I would love to travel around those lakes whenever I get free time. It would be great fun cycling and listening to the chirping sounds of birds in the lakeside area.

Tad ~ Writing

Hi, my name is Tad.  I am a Junior in the process of getting my BA in Manufacturing Engineering Technology.  This is my first year tutoring in the CAS, however, this isn't my first rodeo in the tutoring scene.  I have three years experience tutoring GED classes to students who didn't want to learn, so imagine what we can do if you want it?!  I enjoy helping others, and I am confident in connecting with others and explaining things in a way that fits for you.

I can help with science and engineering papers, as well as presentations.  I excel in presentations and public speaking, as well as creative writing.  I also enjoy philosophical discussions and essays.
