Our History
The Language Learning for Academic Success program was developed by an interdisciplinary group of Minnesota State University faculty and staff. The group was concerned about the academic success and retention of immigrant students for whom English is not their first language. The LLAS program was initiated with funding from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Underrepresented Student Retention Initiative. The program has a three part focus: to facilitate student development of college level reading, writing and critical inquiry; to provide time for enhanced language acquisition; and to help students adjust to the new academic climate. The program, established in the fall semester of 2004, provides helpful services to many immigrant students who are in their first year of study at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Our Services
All LLAS services are free. Services are available to all MSU immigrant students whose first language is not English. When students enter the LLAS program, they are assisted with course selection and registration, financial aid information, and identification of MSU support resources. The LLAS program also includes a language support course that helps students build academic English skills that transfer successfully to their other courses. In addition, the LLAS program provides free tutoring services to help students with their MSU coursework. Students who enter the LLAS program can expect the following support:
