Department Music
College Arts & Humanities
Undergraduate Degree Type(s) BA, BS
Program Description These programs are designed for the student who wishes to be licensed to teach music in the public school. Students majoring in music education choose one area of specialization: Vocal Music or Instrumental Music.
Admission Requirements Admission to Major is granted by the department.
Minimum University admission requirements are:
  • a minimum of 32 earned semester credit hours
  • a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 (C)
Other Requirements Entering music majors and minors are expected to have substantial musical experience performing with church or school ensembles, or as a soloist. Before admission to the major or minor, music literacy (the ability to read musical notation) must be demonstrated. Though Minnesota State Mankato does offer a course in basic music-reading skills, it is strongly advised that you begin those studies prior to arriving.
