Program Description	Mathematics in its purest form is an art concerned with ideas. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics believes that an undergraduate major should be both an introduction to more advanced study and a survey of the many facets of mathematics. Unlike many other disciplines, mathematics is a very structured subject. Consequently, the curriculum consists of sequences of interrelated courses which must be taken in the appropriate order. The courses in mathematics are organized with the needs of three groups of students in mind: those interested in mathematics as a major field of study who may be planning more advanced study, preparing to teach or intending to use their skills in business, industry or government; those needing mathematics primarily as a tool in other disciplines (engineering, science, etc.); those interested in the logical and cultural aspects of mathematics as an element in their general education.
Admission Requirements	Admission to major is required for enrollment in 300 and 400 level courses. Requirements for admission are: a minimum of 32 earned semester credit hours a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 (C) completion of Math 121 and 122 (Calculus I and II) with a grade of at least “C” or above in each course. Application for admission forms are available in the College Advising Center, Trafton C-125.
Other Requirements	All students majoring in mathematics should complete Calculus (Math 121, 122, 223), Linear Algebra (Math 247) and Foundations (Math 290) in their first two years as preparation for more advanced courses. In addition students should choose 15 credits as electives from Math 316, 321, 332, 345, 375, 392, 411, 417, 418, 422, 425, 435, 442, 446, 447, 455, 456, 470, 471, 480 and 496. Mathematics majors preparing for teacher licensure are required to complete Intermediate Analysis (Math 316), College Geometry (Math 332), Abstract Algebra (Math 345), Probability and Statistics (Math 354), Discrete Mathematics (Math 375), History of Mathematics (Math 480), Advanced Viewpoint of 5-8 School Mathematics (Math 483), Technology in 5-12 School Mathematics (Math 484) and Teaching Secondary School Mathematics (Math 485) along with the courses for professional education in the College of Education.
